Security guard at Auschwitz dismissed in aftermath of sign theft

AUSCHWITZ, Poland (WJC)–The Auschwitz Museum has dismissed a security guard a security guard who was in charge last month when the infamous sign ‘Arbeit macht frei’, which hangs over the entrance to the former Nazi death camp, was stolen.

“We found that the fault was human error. The head of the security team on service at the time of the incident has been dismissed,” a museum spokesman was quoted by the Polish news agency PAP as saying. He added: “The guard waited too long before alerting the head of the security service and the police.” Two other security guards who were suspended after the theft have now returned to work.

Police recovered the metal sign bearing the Nazi slogan “Work will set you free” in German three days after it was stolen and arrested five Polish men in connection with the robbery. A former Swedish neo-Nazi has also been indicted, and it is believed that the theft was commissioned by a British Nazi sympathizer.
