Congregation Beth Israel plans day of healthy cooking and gardening

SAN DIEGO (Press Table) — The community is invited to attend Congregation Beth Israel’s (CBI) 4th environmental extravaganza with the theme of “Green Table, Just Table” on Sunday, February 27.  The program will provide experiences in healthy cooking and eating; gardening; and responsible care of our environment. The program begins at 9:00 a.m. with a cooking demonstration, followed by a short documentary and two speakers starting. A farmers market and bake sale will be open from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

This year CBI is showing “Homegrown Revolution” a 16-minute documentary. In the midst of a densely urban setting in downtown Pasadena, the Dervaes family have transformed their home into an urban homestead. They harvest nearly three tons of organic food from their 1/10 acre garden while incorporating many back-to-basics practices, as well as solar energy and biodiesel.

Local Chef Jeff Rossman of Terra Restaurant will start the event out with a cooking demonstration followed immediately by the documentary. In addition, Nan Sterman of Plant Soup, Inc. will lecture on Growing a Jewish Garden and landscape designer Doug Kalal will speak about 30 Great Drought-Tolerant Plants.

The farmers market will feature local and organic exhibitors with items such as fair-trade chocolate, local fruits and vegetables from Garden of Eden CSA, hydroponic vegetables, jams, soaps, aromatherapy, bamboo clothes, reusable sandwich bags, natural cleaning supplies and skin care products, and cacti and succulents. Some exhibitors will be providing free samples to whet your appetite and free seedlings to plant in your yard.

In addition, an exciting group of exhibitors will be participating including: Jeff Rossman who will be selling and signing his book From Terra’s Table;” San Diego Coastkeeper; City Farmers Nursery, Olive Branch Green Building Supply, the Water Conservation Garden, H2OME Rainwater Harvesting, Heartland Harvest Foods, Solar Smart, Master Gardeners – UC Extension, Charlie’s Best Bread, and many others!

Bake sale proceeds will benefit Jewish World Watch’s project of providing solar cookers for families in Darfur.

Electronic Waster Recycling will collect used electronic equipment for FREE!   Specifically, items accepted include:  Monitors, CRT Screens, Plasma Screens, Televisions, LCD Screens, Laptops, Printers, Copiers, Faxes, Scanners, Microwaves (fee may apply), Computer Towers, Stereo Systems, Mice/Trackballs, Cell Phones, Speakers, Telephones, Uninterruptable Power Supplies, VCRs, DVD Players, Servers, Server Racks.

The event is free and open to the community; however, please RSVP for planning purposes by calling 858-535-1111 ext. 3800 or online at www.cbisd.org/rsvp.
