Open Letter to the Proverbial Volunteer

Dear You-All:  Sir, Miss or Madam:

With your permission I deviate from my usual Woman to Girl chit chat aimed at the USO JWB Junior Hostesses, and head straight for you. Today, dear general public, I come at you with a message, a pernt to get across.

We wonder what is happening to the usual spirit of magnanimity of our Jewish community regarding our temporary guests in the community, the Military Personnel.  Have you noticed the attitude of lethargy creeping up on us, the feeling of apathy towards our boys in the Armed Services?  Why does this happen!  Why should it take an all out war to rouse our sense of  patriotic duty, our obligations as citizens of the Jewish community?  Rest assured, any servicemen gratefully accepting our efforts to make him welcome in “home away from home” would readily sacrifice this opportunity, and remain happily at home, in his own community, where he would eagerly exchange places with a civilian volunteer.

True enough, everyone reaches a stage where he is up to here with social work, with volunteering around the clock, and ending up with a few, small, select ulcers.  Nevertheless, we cannot sit back and allow ourselves to eliminate this assistance to our Armed Forces, extending a welcome they rightfully deserve.  It occurs to us to ponder where would we be, what would happen to us, if the Servicemen sat back on his, and decided this was it, he’d had it, his uniform bored him, and he knew he’d look dreamy in an Ivy League.  Quoting someone or other, “Dunt esk.”  Fortunately for us, his preference for civilian status goes unheeded until the O.K. sign goes out from Uncle Sam.

Those boys in the service are protecting us, you know. What are we doing for them?”  Shouldn’t we shelve some of our activities, a card game here, a golf game there, and put those leisure hours toward doing something for USO?  Sometime!  Are we permitting ourselves luxuries with necessities flying out the window?  Well and nu, are we?  Remember without these servicemen doing a bit for our country, no country we’d have, no club work either, no nothin’!

As previously stated, this was not directed at you, my ever-lovin’ Junior Hostesses, but incidental like, if the slipper fitteh, put it on.  This is written for the parents, The Adults, the shoulder-to-the-wheel type folks, who read this, I hope, who’ll come forth, I pray, and who’ll volunteer, I know.

And thank you , Mac, for all the extra space.  Next issue, three lines, I promise…

Southwestern Jewish Press, February 3, 1956, Page 8

The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo appearing here on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 20-21 at Russ Auditorium, has been the most popular and loved ballet in the united States ever since its first performance when it swept across the country with the world’s finest ballet stars and great classic ballets.

Sergei J. Denham, director of the Ballet since 1938, has maintained the classic tradition, while also offering new and modern ballets, with American choreographers increasingly represented in the repertoire.

For Youskevitch it was a return to the company with which he first appeared in this country and with which he danced until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1943.  He will appear in all cities of the present tour, and will also act as artistic advisor on the classic repertoire in which he is preeminent.

Igor Yosekevitch joins ballet stars Frederic Franklin, Nina Novak, Leon Daniellan, Gertrude Tyven, Yvonne Chouteau, Irina Borowska, Alan Howard, Victor Moreno and the large company which will appear here on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 20-21
