Pickwick Theatre explores mental illness in ‘David and Lisa’

"David Gregory and Nettie Allen portray the title characters in 'David & Lisa'"

SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — David & Lisa by James Reach is the featured production of the Pickwick Theatre Nov 11-13 and 18-20. The play is a strange, appealing, and utterly fascinating telling of two mentally disturbed adolescents: David, who is tortured by his mania against being touched, and Lisa, who has a split personality. One of her selves will speak only in childish rhymes and insists on being spoken to in the same manner. The play follows their progresses (and retrogression) during one term at Berkeley School, where they have come under the sympathetic guidance of psychiatrist Alan Swinford and his staff.

Based on the novel by eminent psychiatrist,Theodore Isaac Rubin, then the screen play by Eleanor Perry for the award-winning motion picture of the same name. Laughter, heart break, and suspense distinguish this authentic and well-told story. This production, directed by Geoffrey A. Cox, promises to be both emotional and ultimately uplifting, with a talented cast of teens and adults from the San Diego community.

Says Cox of the show, “David & Lisa is a fascinating story and this production is incredible. Each member of the cast is truly talented and the youth in the cast have really taken their characters to heart. A truly great piece of theatre.”
