SAN DIEGO (Press Release)– Mexican sculptor José Sacal donated his 7-foot-by-7-foot sculpture First Step, weighing over 700 pounds,  to the San Diego Jewish Academy, courtesy of Jacobo and Hermosa Farca Foundation, at a special unveiling on Wednesday, March 7.

This gift was facilitated by the collaborative efforts of WIZO-Tijuana San Diego Organization, KEN Jewish Community and the Latin American Community of San Diego.

Sacal’s work was introduced by Gregorio Luke, who curated a recent exhibition of his  sculptures at the Latino Museum of History, Art and Culture.  The Mexican artist also has been exhibited in Europe, Mexico, and Asia.

Twenty-three of his monumental sculptures are placed throughout Latin America and in 2008 he became the first Mexican artist to have his work permanently displayed in a public plaza in China (Jing`An District, Shanghai.) SACAL’s sculpture Holocausto is on display at The Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.

The donation of First Step was “to honor all the families who uprooted themselves from other countries and made a new life in San Diego,” according to the San Diego Jewish Academy, which serves families from all over the world including Mexico, South Africa, Israel, Russia, Peru, Argentina and China.

Sacal has expressed the belief that children of all ages should have the opportunity to be exposed to art and dedicated First Step in their honor as they move through the various stages of child development.
