Bob Filner draws Chicano support in mayor’s bid

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)- National and local Latino leaders came out to support Congressman and Mayoral Candidate Bob Filner Saturday, March 10, at Chicano Park. Congressman Luis Gutierrez (IL- 4), Congressman Charles Gonzalez (TX-20) joined local Latino leaders in endorsing Bob Filner for Mayor of San Diego.

More than 25 supporters met Mayoral Candidate Bob Filner in Chicano Park, Saturday, March 10th

“I’m humbled to receive the support of Congressman Gutierrez and Gonzalez and our community leaders, all of whom I’ve worked alongside to make sure Latinos have a voice in Washington, DC and in San Diego,” said Filner. “As I did on the City Council, on the School Board and in the House of Representatives, I will be a Mayor who is on the side of our communities, not the side of the powerful and privileged. That means reaching out and making sure the Mayor’s office is open and accessible to everyone not just the powerbrokers. It means investing in all of our communities. It means making sure all of our children have access to a good education. And it means creating an economy with good paying jobs — not just in one part of the city — but all over the city.”

Filner currently represents the 51st District which is one of the most diverse districts in the country. He has consistently fought to make sure Latinos are involved in government decision making, including the creation of a Latino Advisory Board. Those efforts led the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce to recognize Filner at their annual gala earlier this year for his work to improve the San Ysidro Port-of-Entry and ensure that the community’s voices were heard at all levels of government.

Filner was also endorsed today by the Chicano Democratic Association of San Diego, supporters in saturday’s endorsement included: David Valladolid, CEO & President at Parent Institute for Quality Education; Roger Cazares, Activist; Jose Naranjo, Local 229; Guillermo Lizarraga, President, US Customs Brokers; Linda Blair-Forth, President, Comprehensive Training Systems; Maria Nieto Senour, Board of Trustees San Diego City College; Yolanda Hernandez, San Ysidro School Board; Richard Barrera, San Diego School Board; Caridad Sanchez, District Director, Barbara Boxer; Delia Talamantez, Activist; Humberto Peraza, Southwest College Board of Trustees;  David Alvarez, San Diego City Council;  Steve Castaneda, Chula Vista City Council;  Denise Ducheny, Former State Senator and candidate 51st CD – CA.; and  Waynee Lucero, Chicano Democratic Association
