S.I. Fox Lodge B.B. To Install Officers

The Jewish community is invited to the tenth annual installation of officers of the Samuel I. Fox Lodge No. 1747, B’nai B’rith, Tuesday, January 8, 8:30  p.m., at the Beth Jacob Center.  A milchic bufet will be served after the ceremony.

Installing officer will be Edward Breitbard, representing Grand Lodge District No. 4. Brother Breitbard is a member of the Executive Board of the Grand Lodge. He will be assisted by Morrie S. Kraus, also a member of the Executive Board, Grand Lodge.

They will install the following officers: President, Fred Yaruss; first vice-president Harry Ruja; second vice-president, Herbert S. Burkin; secretary, Manuel Rosenthal; treasuer, Ralph A. Cohen; warden, Joseph Schloss; guardian, Joseph Gelman; chaplain, Irving Small; trustees, Sam Orlansky, Victor Rosenberg, Jacob Rosenthal, Sanford Sack.

Dr. Harry Ruja, incoming first vice-president, will preside.

Temple Youth League Caravan To Hold Tenth Anniversary Service

One of the most active weekends in the history of Temple Youth League of Temple Beth Israel will be conducted Friday through Sunday, December 28th to 30th.  TYL will be host to over 40 young people from the youth groups of Reform Congregations in Beverly Hills and Long Beach, and an exciting program of activities has been arranged under the chairmanship of Jack Sharpe and Ilene Heiman.

Highlighting the program will be the Tenth Anniversary Service in the Temple Friday, December 28th at 8 p.m.  A special youth service will be participated in by the following past presidents, who will also receive Certificates of Merit: Fred Weitzen, Jr., Arline Orlansky, Lawrence Solomon, Hebert Solomon, Burton Sharpe, Aaron Kolkey, Richard Godes, Joyce Berner, Jane Cohn, Arthur Pogrell and Jack Sharpe.  Rabbi Cohn will preach on the subject, “Ten Years of Our Youth.”

All Temple Youth League “Alumni” have received letters of invitation to attend the service, and they are urged to bring their friends. The first president of T.Y.L., Fred Weitzen Jr., is in charge of arrangements and plans for the Social Hour following the service are being made by Mrs. Aaron Kolkey (Chairman), Mrs. Fred Weitzen Jr., Mrs Herbert Solomon, Mrs. Bruce Witte and Susan Solof.

Among activities planned for the young people attending the Caravan are Friday evening service and reception, a Saturday morning brunch and discussion group at the Temple, a Saturday afternoon conducted tour of the Aircraft Carrier Hornet, Saturday evening dancing at the Temple with an orchestra, and a Sunday program of cultural and recreational activities.  All young people of high school and college age are invite to participate in the Caravan.

Council ‘Story Ladies’ Please Sick Kids

The “Story Ladies” of the San Diego Council of Jewish Women climaxed their 1956 efforts to make pleasant hours for hospitalized children at a party in the playroom of the County Hospital Pediatrics Ward on Monday, Dec. 24.  Cake, ice cream, and gaily gift-wrapped toys were presented to each child. MRs. Melvin Hoffman, Hospital Chairman, presented the Ward with a television set. In addition, she presented the hospital staff with the first 50 “Council Kid” stocking dolls, handmade by Council women, which will be distributed to children entering the hospital and which they may take home with them.

Ruth Aronoff was elected President of the San Diego Auxiliary for 1957; Goldie Schusterman, 1st Vice-President; Esther Schwartz, 2nd Vice President; Bessye Siegel, 3rd Vice President; Fanny Addleson, 4th Vice President; Goldie Kitaen, 5th Vice President; Ethel Berwin, Treasurer; Gladys Tappan, Recording Secretary; Helen Medak, Financial Secretary; Rose Barr, Corr. Secretary; Bertha Friedman, Social Secretary. Trustee are Marie Richards, Anna Lazarowitz, Marian Resnick, Becky Brd, Jackie Parker, Toby Stevens Dora Yaskiel, Ann Kolkey, Bess Schissell, Cele Schwartz and Jeanne Camiel.

Anna Brooks, Honorary President, Public Relations; Jennie Siner is Religious Chairman, Jennie Kochberg, Honorary Boar Member, and outgoing President, Ethel Berwin, Councilor.

Installation of the above officers will take place on February 20th.

The Six Points  Branch of the Jewish Community Center is having a family fun day at the Jewish Community Center, 4056 University Avenue on Sunday, Jan. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m.  The six point branch is composed of residents of Point Loma, Loma Portal, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach and Clairemont.

Nathan Bloom, President, announces that a variety program will be offered consisting of talented youngsters and guests. The affair is open to everyone in the community but will be hosted by the Six Points Branch committee.  3 children’s groups will be formed to continue on a regular basis. The adult group is planning a monthly get-together at the Center that will include very interesting programs on a social-cultural level. The Six Points Branch is open to everyone who would like to join and is a featured program of the Jewish Community Center.

Ballet Dance Classes

More girls are needed to register for Creative Dance and Ballet Classes that will begin on Janmuary 9th. Early registration is urged to insure the continuation of this activity. Phone the Center –AT 1-7744 to register your child.

Board Elects

The Jewish Community Center Board of Directors at their last meeting elected the following officers: William B. Schwartz, President; Maury Novak, Sidney Rose and Morris W. Douglas, Vice Presidents; Seymour Rabin, Treasurer, and Bernard Arenson, Secretary.  Committee Chairmen will be announced in the next issue of the Jewish Press.
