SAN DIEGO — If you watch KUSI Television, cable 9 during the week-ends, day and night, you can not miss the informative weather reports of the weekend meteorologist, Dave Scott. His extensive knowledge of weather patterns and predictions combined with a relaxed delivery makes him a valuable asset to the station and keeps us confidently informed. Also, his feature segments called Dave’s World of Wonder, provide us with fascinating tidbits fromSan Diego and all over the world.

But what most people do not know is that Dave Scott is also a most accomplished composer, pops singer, and jazz player of the trombone.

I have admired Dave’s television work for years, and this summer, it will be my pleasure in cooperating musically with him, with the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra accompanying him in several of his own creations, as well as a medley of songs made famous by Frank Sinatra.

Dave was born in Canada and grew up in California and Hawaii. He started playing the ukulele, and later switched to trombone, taking lessons from the legendary Louis Armstrong’s trombonist Trummy Young. He won several performance awards including a two-year scholarship with the Honolulu Symphony. In San Diego, he attended and graduated from Grossmont High School, Grossmont College, and SDSU.

After spending three years on the canals and rivers of France, he became the first American to earn his captain’s license to navigate French barges, becoming the Captain of De Hoop on the Canal du Nivernais. Then, he returned to SDSU for a BS degree in Marketing, and has since earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geosciences with an emphasis in Meteorology from Mississippi State University.

Dave Scott started his broadcasting career inSan Diego, with various internships with local stations and the National Weather Service, writing commercials and weather reports. He landed his first on-the-air job with KYMA-TV in Yuma, moved on to KOLD  in Tucson, and has been for many years the weekend weather anchor for KUSI-TV.

With the TICO Orchestra, he will be singing and performing on the trombone some of his award-winning songs, including Elena, Samba del Sol, Table for Two, Out on the Street, and the Frank Sinatra Medley. All these works were orchestrated by the talented San Diego musician Irving Flores, an accomplished pianist, arranger, composer, and music producer. He is originally fromVeracruz, Mexico, and a graduate of the National Music Conservatory in Mexico City.

In these two concerts, the TICO Orchestra will also perform two Sousa Marches;  Tahiti Trot; Tea for Two, The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I;  New York, New York;  Lullaby of Broadway;  music from television, Mission Impossible, and from film scores by James Horner, as well as well as a polka by Josef Strauss and other selections.

These two Pops Concerts will take place on Sunday, July 15, 3:00 p.m., at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, and on Sunday, July 22, 7:00 in an admission-free outdoor concert in the grassy area of the Allied Gardens Recreation Center, off Waring Road and Greenbrier.

For the July 15 concert there will be one additional selection, the first movement of Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2, with 16-year-old pianist Danli Liang. She is a junior at La Jolla Country Day School, and was recently named a Young Steinway Artist, a designation shared by only 47 other young pianists around the world.   She has performed in Carnegie Hall several times, and won the first place in the San Diego Symphony’s Young Artist Competition in 2011-12, and performed as a soloist with the orchestra.

For more information, directions, reservations, or group rates, call Tifereth Israel Synagogue, (619) 697 6001, or you can buy your tickets online at www.tiferethisrael.com/TICO.
