JFS College Avenue Center tells April schedule

Jewish Family Service San DiegoSAN DIEGO (Press Release)– The College Avenue Center (CAC) is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 15 & 16 and Monday and Tuesday, April 21 & 22.  Following is the schedule for the rest of April 2014:

Mondays and Wednesdays, monthly from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

BrainHQ – When it comes to brain fitness training, BrainHQ is best in class. Built by a team of top neuroscientists, with exercises proven in dozens of published studies to make real and lasting improvements in brain function, BrainHQ is your personal brain gym.

The April class begins on the 2nd.  This class is limited to 10 people, so sign up to reserve your spot.  The cost for this class is $10/month for members and $13/month for non-members.  If you commit to three months at a time, the cost will be $25/3 months for members and $30/3 months for non-members.   The next class will begin May 5th.

Timkin Museum Presentation with Jim Gray – The Timkin Museum is a true treasure in Balboa Park. This small gem is free to the public and contains an extensive collection of paintings and other artwork ranging from the Middle Ages through the 19th Century. Jim Gray, docent with the museum will present a slide presentation of the museums’ finest pieces of art.

Marty Murphy: Vocal Music – Marty is a classic Irish Tenor who has such a pleasant manner and a lyrical, tuneful voice.  He will sing a variety of old standards, Irish tunes, and sing-alongs.

Your Pictures as Art with Kevin Linde from MOPA – This 4-part series of free classes is offered through the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. In this series of classes, Kevin, our instructor will encourage photographs that can be mounted and proudly displayed in our homes or perhaps in a gallery!  You will be taking digital photos and learning how to mount and frame them as works of art.  Our goal is to put together some pieces that you can display at our Art Fair in May. Tuesday, April 8 at 12:45 p.m.

Alfred Hitchcock, his early British Films, and showing, The Lady Vanishes with Judith Levine – In the 1930’s, before Alfred Hitchcock made his famous movies in America, he was a prolific director in Britain. This black and white mystery classic is compelling and will keep you guessing. Judith will conduct a short discussion about the director before the film and then follow up with another discussion after we view the film.

 

Friday, April 11 at 12:30 p.m.

Andrea Ladmer, Sing-along – Andrea Ladmer will lead us on a lively sing-along. We’ll have our song books and we can sing along to some of our favorite songs.

 

Monday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m.

JFS General Information – Alissa Messian is our Information Station hostess.  She will be bringing information about the 50+ programs and services that JFS runs, so please visit her table to learn about the myriad of services that our agency provides.

Passover Luncheon and Model Seder: Passover Holiday Lunch at 12:00 noon and special Passover Model Seder at 12:30 p.m. at the College Avenue Center led by Rabbi Aliza Berk, Community Chaplain with Jewish Family Service of San Diego. No reservations needed. Seniors 60 and over, suggested donation of $4, under 60 years of age $7 fee. For more information, call 858-637-3270.

 

Wednesday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m.

OASIS: Meet the Computer – Never tried a computer before? In this course you will get to meet the computer, the keyboard and the mouse, and you will learn what they are and how to use them. No experience is necessary for you to take this relaxed, fun class.  Workbook fee: $5 for members, $8 for non-members.

Note: If you have never used a computer before, this is an excellent class to take before Introduction to Computers.

Karaoke with Laura Jane! – She’s back!  Our favorite San Diego Songstress returns with her karaoke machine, giving each of us a chance to be a star for the afternoon.  Come join Karaoke Queen Laura Jane for a wildly good time!

Office McElroy, Community Liaison with the SDPD – Officer McElroy will be here to talk about our neighborhood and answer your questions about safety.

Yom Hashoa: Holocaust Memorial Day – We will have a short ceremony at lunchtime- and then, at 1pm, we will show a film, to commemorate Yom Hashoa.

Tuesdays, April 29 – June 3 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

New series of classes: Healthier Living with Diabetes – Give yourself the gift of wellness – Managing diabetic health conditions.  This class will benefit those with pre-diabetes, diabetes, caregivers of those with diabetes, and anyone interested in preventing diabetes.  Plan to attend all sessions.  You must sign up for this class. It is free.

Wednesday, April 30 at 11:15 a.m.

Trip to a Free Classical Music Concert at SDSU, featuring the Ciele trio – A beautiful afternoon concert of Chamber music – a pianist, violinist, and cellist will play classical selections.  We will offer a free shuttle over to SDSU at 11:15 a.m. – and then we will enjoy the concert at 12:00 noon and return to the center at 1pm. We will be shuttled to the front door of Rhapsody Hall at SDSU. There is limited space, please sign up in the front office or call 858-637-3270 to reserve your spot. This program is free!

Borrowing Library Books for the Kindle – From your home computer you can borrow a broad range of eBooks for your Kindle without leaving your home and at no cost.  And, there is never a worry about being charged for an overdue book.
In addition to borrowing library eBooks, the steps taught in the class will enable you to download public domain eBooks and free eBooks from the Kindle store.
In addition to having a Kindle, requirements for participating in the class are the following:
1) San Diego City or/and San Diego County Library card
2) An Amazon.com account, either beforehand or established in the class
3) a USB cable for your Kindle (the Kindle charging cable)
If you just wish to learn how to borrow an eBook without the hands-on experience, there are no requirements.

The College Avenue Center offers hot kosher lunches, Monday – Friday at 12:00 p.m.  Soup & Salad Bar offered Monday – Friday from 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.

Suggested donation for seniors: $4; Fee for all others: $7.
