J*Company announces 2014-15 family season

Center for Jewish Culture logoLA JOLLA, California (Press Release) – JCompany Youth Theatre’s 2014-2015 “Forever Families” Season takes family audiences on a journey with great stories with meaningful themes of young people searching for one thing – family.  Artistic Director Joey Landwehr decided on these musicals, based on his experiences, “The JCompany has always and continues to be a second home, a – family, for young people across San Diego County. We have created a warm and welcoming environment for young people to explore their creativity, instill confidence and build self-esteem through the magic of the performing arts. This is all done inclusively, regardless of gender, religion, ethnic background, sexual orientation or economic status.”

Landwehr goes on to say, “When I was a young boy I had to create my own — family. Thank goodness for my theatrical family guiding me to whom I am today or I don’t know where I would be. JCompany creates Theatrical Forever Families where young people make friends for a life-time; and that is only part of the excellence that makes JCompany one of the nation’s indispensable theatres for youth.”

The Season begins Saturday, October 25, 2014 with Disney’s Peter Pan.  Pirates! of Penzance follows on January 17,; Annie arrives on March 7;  and West Side Story on May 9..

Believe! Disney’s Peter Pan Based on the Disney film and J.M. Barrie’s play,Disney’s Peter Pan is a modern version of the timeless tale about a boy who wouldn’t grow up. The score includes new arrangements of classic Disney songs, such as “Following The Leader,” “You Can Fly,” “The Second Star To The Right” and “Yo Ho, A Pirates Life For Me.” This is a fun-filled, short show with fairies, pirates, mermaids, Indians, lost boys, and of course Peter Pan!

The New Year will great us with the wacky, irreverent Gilbert and Sullivan’s entertaining  Pirates! of Penzance. This new version spins an hilarious farce one part Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean and two parts Gilbert & Sullivan. The beauty, wit and whimsy of this classic score is suffused with a modern sensibility, making this version an excellent choice for all ages. Come join a ship-full of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often-ridiculous dictates of honor and duty. Big laughs and non-stop entertainment!

Up next, Leapin’Lizards! It’s Annie. The popular comic strip heroine Little Orphan Annie takes center stage at J*Company. With pluck and positivity, Annie charms everyone she meets despite a next-to-nothing start in the Depression-era New York City of the 1930s. She is determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. When billionaire Oliver Warbucks decides to invite an orphan to his mansion for Christmas, Annie gets her chance to experience NYC anew outside the confines of the orphanage. Despite Miss Hannigan’s evil machinations, Annie befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and finds a new home alongside Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

The Season closer will be West Side Story. JCompany has been chosen as the only youth theatre to be given the rights to the world’s greatest love story that takes to the streets in a landmark Broadway musical. Touted as one of the theatre’s finest accomplishments; Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their touching struggle to survive in a world of hate and prejudice makes this one of the most innovative and relevant musical dramas of our time. This brilliant Leonard Bernstein score is brought to you the way it should be with a full, brilliant orchestra.
