Fund Drive Leaders Take Responsibility
Southwestern Jewish Press, March 7, 1958, Pages 1, 4

Rapid organization within the structure of the 1958 campaign was reported this week as two new appointments were announced by Campaign Chairman Harry Wax.

Martin Gleich, home builder, has accepted appointment as Vice-Chairman of the campaign, and Abraham Abramson the Pace-Setting leadership.

An urgent appeal to the Jewish community of San Diego “to help plan and work collectively and generously for our fellow Jews and for yourselves” was made in a letter from Harry and Ida Wax, asking for volunteer workers in the 1958 campaign for the regular needs of the United Jewish Fund, and the Rescue Fund of the United Jewish Appeal.

“The United Jewish Fund,” Wax said, “is not concerned with just one segment but with the whole vast panorama of life everywhere.  It is a symbol of your devotion to people you don’t know and will never see.”

Both join Wax in the top leadership positions of the Fund campaign.  President of American Housing Guild, one of the largest home building firms in San Diego, Gleich is the first of the Young Leadership Group to assume a major position in community activities.  He has been active in the United Jewish Fund as a Director and is at present a member of the Executive Committee.  In 1956 and 1957 he served as a member of the Fund’s Allocation Committee.

Mr. Abramson has been an active leader in the Jewish community for many years.  The 1957 Pace-Setter Chairman and an ardent campaigner, he brings a wealth of experience to his top position.  A past president of Beth Jacob Synagogue, Abramson is the executive of Abramson Carpet Company.

Gleich, who served in last year’s drive, said he was honored in the appointment and intends to devote all the time necessary for the demands of the campaign.

“Abe Abramson’s acceptance to do a job again in the Pace-Setters Group means that there is no question of the success of the 1958 effort.  He is,” Wax said, “an ardent worker and sincere supporter of Israel and the United Jewish Fund.”

A specially created Junior Matrons Section will serve as part of the Women’s Division of the 1958 United Jewish Fund Campaign, the Women’s Campaign Cabinet decided last week.

This innovation in the Women’s Division, announced by Mrs. Harry Wax, Women’s Chairman, was pressed by an increasing number of young women volunteering their services for this great philanthropic community campaign.
