Authors, Poets due at JCC Library in May

 

Lawrence Family JCC logoSAN DIEGO (SDJW) –Poets and authors will speak about their works during May at the Astor Library of. the Lawrence Family JCC.

On May 6, at 7 p.m. three featured poets will read their original works, and then there will be a half hour open-microphone session when members of the public may read their own poems.  The featured poets are Myla Lichman-Fields, Lee Ben-Yehuda and Steven Schorr.  The program is free, and attendees are encouraged to RSVP to the Astor Library at (858) 362-1150.

On May 11, at 7 p.m. Sam Halpern will discuss  A Far Piece to Canaan: A Novel of Friendship and Redemption.  Halpern’s novel tells of Samuel Zelinsky who returns to the rural Kentucky of his childhood after his wife’s death.  “It is a tale of superstition, secrets, and heroism in the postwar South,” according to organizers of the event, for which tickets are $8 for JCC members, $10 for visitors.

On May 22,  at 7 p.m., Jennifer George explains why Rube Goldberg was so special that his name has become a word in the dictionary meaning (a) inventive, (b) cartoon, and (c) genius.  Her book, The Art of Rube Goldberg reviews Goldberg’s 72-year career in which he wrote and illustrated nearly 50,000 cartoons.  “Goldberg (1883-1970) was the most famous cartoonist of his time, best known for his comical inventions, which were syndicated in newspapers throughout the world.”  Tickets are $8 for JCC members, $10 for visitors.
