SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — He’s still a political science student at the Open University in Jerusalem, but Amotz Eyal, 27, has a tremendous list of accomplishments to his credit — including the founding of the Tazpit News Agency, Israel’s only wire service.

Eyal will give a free lecture on the news media of Israel at 7:45 p.m., Sunday, May 4,  at Beth Jacob Synagogue, 4855 College Avenue, in an appearance which is co-sponsored by San Diego Jewish World, which frequently publishes articles provided by the Tazpit News Agency.

Born in Psagot, and living today in Jerusalem, Eyal has long been socially active. At age 12, he filed a petition with the Israeli Supreme Court requesting that Saturday soccer games be rescheduled to the middle of the week.

In 2005, he organized protests against Israel’s disengagement from Gaza. He served in the IDF, and later worked as a “medical clown” to help young cancer patients in Israeli hospitals. He also worked as an instructor for the “One Family Fund” to help victims of terror.

Eyal was a founder of the Migdalin Student Village near Ariel University, and he founded the Tazpit News Agency in 2010.

Last year, Eyal was awarded the “Spirit of Zion” award, sponsored by the Moskowitz family to honor young Israelis “who have established outstanding Zionist initiatives.”

“Sunday night  is the 5th of Iyar on the Hebrew Calendar, which is Yom Haatzmaut, Israeli Independence Day,” commented Rand Levin, administrator of Beth Jacob Synagogue.  “We look forward to hearing Mr. Eyal speak about this very important aspect of Israeli Independence.”

Eyal’s speech  is “an opportunity to meet a dynamic young man who is likely to be a major journalistic and political force in the Jewish state for years to come” commented Donald H. Harrison, editor of San Diego Jewish World.

“Whether you agree with his politics or not, meeting and hearing Amotz Eyal will provide fascinating insights into Israel’s current political situation,” Harrison said.
