Dr. Joshua Rittoff To Head Professional Division of United Jewish Fund

The Professional Division of the 1958 United Jewish Fund Campaign will be headed by Dr. Joshua Rittoff, according to campaign chairman Harry Wax and his vice-chairman, Martin Gleich.

An innovation in local fund campaigning, the Professional Division was re-established after a study of the growth of the number of Jewish professional men and women in San Diego.

In the Professional Division Dr. Gerald Kobernick will serve as Chairman of Dentists, while Louis Karp will head the Lawyers Division. Dr. Harold Elden will assume leadership of the Doctors Group.  The Optometrists will be headed by Dr. Harry Malin of Pacific Beach.

Dr. Rittoff is a leader in the County Dental Society.  For many years a Director of the United Jewish Fund he has chaired the Allocations Committee of the Fund, and is a member of the Fund’s Executive Committee.  He has been active in several past campaigns.

In announcing appointment of chairmen of the various sections of the Professional Division Rittoff said, “I’m very pleased that these men are willing to give of their very busy professional day to assume responsibilities on behalf of the United Jewish Fund within their professions.  It indicates a deep and sincere desire on the part of our professional group to take their community duties as a part of their every day work.”

Dr. Rittoff stated that over 100 professional men and women will be solicited through this division.  He urged attendance at the Abba Eban Dinner on Thursday, March 13 at the El Cortez Hotel.

‘Compulsion’ To Be Reviewed March 19

The San Diego Chapter of Hadassah announces the review of the exciting and unusual book, “Compulsion,” by Meyer Levin, at the regular luncheon meeting on Wednesday, March 19, at the Lafayette Hotel. The recent headlines proclaiming the parole of Nathan Leopold, the surviving partner in the “thrill slaying” of Bobby Frank after nearly 34 years, has created great interest in the book.

Participating in the program will be Mrs. Irving Alexander, who will narrate the story, Dr. Lawrence Solomon, psychologist, who will discuss the case from the emotional standpoint, and Mr. Herbert Solomon, attorney at law, who will explore the legal aspects.

Mrs. William Podoloff, Education chairman, will make Hadassah’s annual book presentation to the San Diego Library and the San Diego State College Library.  Two books will be given this year as a public service by providing the latest publications on the State of Israel.  The first book is “The Voice of Israel,” a collection of speeches by Abba Eban, Israeli Ambassador to the United States and to the United Nations. The second book is “The Literature of Modern Israel” by Reuben Wallenrod.

Mrs. Fred Leeds, Chairman of the luncheon, said that the Eye-Saver Banks project will be highlighted that afternoon.

Zionist Leaders To Lead U.J.A. Drive

Joseph Olsher and Ruben Umansky accepted the appointment as Co-Chairmen of the Marcher’s Division of the 1958 Drive, Campaign leaders Harry Wax and Martin Gleich announced today.

Both Mr. Olsher and Mr. Umansky are leaders of the local Zionist and Histadrut movement, and have been active in many Fund campaigns as well.

They will be assisted in leadership positions by Mr. Jack Omens, President of the local Labor Zionist Organization, and Mr. Philip Abrams, active community leader.

The Co-chairmen stated that over 100 workers would be active in this division.  This phase of the campaign will officially open on April 7.

At the same time Olsher and Umansky urged all members of the Labor Zionist group to honor Ambassador Abba Eban by attending the inaugural dinner of the United Jewish Fund on March 13 at 7:00 pm. In the Caribbean Ballroom of the El Cortez Hotel.

Yo-Ma-Co News

Highlight of the last Yo-Ma-Co meeting were the color slides of the installation dinner-dance shown by Jack Brisker.

The Club has again volunteered to have a rummage sale to benefit the new Jewish Center.  It will be held later in the year and chaired by last year’s team of Mrs. Mona Sharpe and Mrs. Pearl Strauss.

On Wednesday, March 12, 9 p.m., Mr. Charles Horn, recently returned from Russia, will be the guest of YoMaCo and will show his collection of color slides taken behind the Iron Curtain. All are welcomed to attend this meeting at the Highland and Landis Center.

Rose Weitzman, president of the Pioneer Women-Negba Club, announced that at the March meeting two members, Rose Brooker and Mrs. Sam Laevin, were honored.  Mrs. Brooker is leaving on a trip to Israel and Mrs. Leavin is moving back to Chicago.

A musical program presented by Cantor Israel Dubner, and a traditional Purim luncheon were features of the meeting.

Barbara Belovin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Belovin, was chosen Queen Esther at the Purim Ball held March 1.

Beth Jacob Auxiliary

The Beth Jacob Auxiliary will hold their Purim Dinner on Sunday, March 9 at 6 p.m.  A delicious home-cooked beef dinner will be served, according to Jennie Bloomfield, President.  Chairman for the dinner will be Lena Feller and Bertha Friedman.

Harry Kolber of Chicago, Illinois died on February 15 in San Diego.  Mr. Kolber was the uncle of Mrs. Dan Ostroger.

Funeral services were held in Los Angeles.

New Officers To Be Installed By Tifereth Sisterhood

A slate of new officers for the coming year will be presented by Mrs. Henry Price, chairman of the Nominating Committee, at the March 11 Tifereth Israel Sisterhood Luncheon. Voting on this slate will take place at the April meeting, and installation of new officers will be in May. Other nominations for elective offices may be submitted to Mrs. Price at 10785 Fuerte Drive, La Mesa, not less than 15 days before the April 8 meeting. Such nominations must be in writing, signed by two members in good standing and with the written assurance of the nominee that she will accept the office if elected.

Circle captain for the delicious meat luncheon will be Mrs. Isadore Teacher, assisted by Mrs. Robert Tobin.

The afternoon program will be presented by Rabbi Levens, who will review “The Last Angry Man,” by Gerald Greene.

Andres Segovia To Play at Russ

Andres Segovia, would famous master of the Spanish guitar, will appear in concert on March 15 in Rjss Auditorium with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.  Dr. Erno Daniel will be the orchestra’s guest conductor for the mid-season program which will begin at 8:30 p.m.

During the March 154 concert at Russ Auditorium Segovia ill play guitar solos by Bach, Sor and Albeniz.  With the orchestra he will perform the Concerto in D, Op. 92 for guitar and orchestra which was written for him by Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Sr. Adults To Hear Positive Approach

Mr. Arthur Norris, well known great books discussion leader and teacher of philosophy in the San Diego City schools, will speak on “The Positive Approach in Everyday Living” at the Senior Adult meeting, sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, Tuesday, March 18, 1 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, 4056 University.

A special training session led by Mr. Irving Mortin, assistant executive director of the Jewish Community Center for Council volunteers who will work with Sr. Adults in the new Center is to be held on Wednesdays, March 12 and 26, the latter session being a workshop in the Center.

Mrs. Herbert Reder is Council vice president coordinating Sr. Adult activities and MRs. Hebert Malley is chairman of the Sr. Adult committee.

Men’s Club To Hear Dr. Warren March 19

Dr. Sidney Warren, Professor of History and Political Science at California Western University will be the featured speaker at the Wednesday, March 19 dinner meeting of the Men’s Club of Temple Beth Israel. At 6:30 p.m. at the Mission Valley Country Club, the group will hear Dr. Warren discuss “Strategy for Survival in the Space Age.”

Possessing an impressive background in History and Education, Dr. Warren received his doctorate in History.  He was a former Fulbright Professor at the University of Durham, England, and a frequent contributor to such magazines as Current History.  As a member of the Temple, he is well kown to many members as a charming and informative speaker, and the group is anticipating a record attendance at this meeting, according to Chairman Norman Mann.

Reservations may be made with Dr. Mann at Juniper 2-9455 or with Mrs. Wyner at the Temple.  The meeting is open to the general public.

Junior Choir Presents Operetta

The Junior Choir of the Tifereth Israel Synagogue under the direction of Cantor Joseph Cysner, will present the Operetta “The Fiddler’s Purim” by Ray M. Cook on Sunday, March 16th at 11 a.m. in the Synagogue Auditorium. The operetta will be preceded by a Purim Ballade composed by Dr. Abraham W. Binder.  The program will be part of the P.T.A. meeting.  The community is cordially invited.

Couples Club Set Purim Party Mar. 15

In response to many requests of its members, Tifereth Israel Couples Club invites all young couples in San Diego Jewish Community, couples with children in school and their friends to its challenging program “Haman’s Noose.”  The date: Saturday evening, March 15th, 8:15 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the Synagogue Center, 30th and Howard Streets.

“Your Grandchildren – Will They Be Jewish? Will be the subject of a panel discussion, aimed to stimulate questions and comments from the audience.  The panelists will be Francis Margolin, M.A., Arthur Redelseheimer, Ph.D. and Rabbi Monroe Levens.

In keeping with the festive holiday of Purim, Sybil Fishman will render lovely melodies.  There will be tempting Purim refreshments.  Donation for non-members will be 50c, which may be applied to membership dues if paid the same evening.

Ida Nasatir To Review “Angry Man’

An outstanding book review given by Ida Nasatir will be featured at the luncheon meeting to be held by the Sisterhood of Temple Beth Israel.  The event will take place in the Temple Center on Tuesday, March 11th at 11:45 p.mn. instead of the regular Wednesday meeting to accommodate the UJF Women’s Group who are holding a luncheon on that day.

Mrs. Nasatir will review “The Last Angry Man,” a recent best seller written by Gerald Greene.  This is a highly exciting and colorful story of two worlds; one—the television world—and the other that of medicine. The book has been purchased by Columbia Pictures, the Readers’ Digest and the Book-of-the-Month Club.

A copy of the book will be given as a door prize.

Presenting the program are Mrs. Vailia Dennis, chairman and Mrs. Morton J. Cohn, co-chairman. Mrs. Samuel Kerper, decoration chairman, has obtained material from the publisher to be used for table décor and display.  Luncheon chairman, Mrs. Ernest Haas, requests that reservations be made with Luncheon Captains, Mmes. ‘First Night of Opera’ at Coffee Chat

Dr. Jan Popper will be the featured speaker at the Council of Jewish Women’s “First Night of Opera” to be held at the next Mr. and Mrs. Coffee Chat on Thursday, March 20, at 8 p.m. in the Terrace Room of the Lafayette Hotel.

Dr. Popper, a noted pianist, composer and conductor, is a professor of music at the University of California at Los Angeles.  He has accompanied such noted concert artists as Rise Stevens and Rose Bampton and has appeared as guest conductor at the Hollywood Bowl.  Mary Louis Knapp, concert singer, will help Dr. Popper provide “illustrations in sound.”

The charge of $1.00 will cover refreshments and help provide a needed scholarship fund for worthy music students. Reservatons may be made through Mrs. Lester Kraus or Mrs. Simon Reznikoff.

Furious Flamencos and provocative provincial dances of Spain blend in a kaleidoscopic whirl as today’s greatest Spanish dancer, Jose Greco, leads his tempestuous troupe of dancers,  singers and musicians in another vivid San Diego performance in the Russ Auditorium on Impresario Mary Bran’s concert series at 8:30 Sunday night, March 16.

The vivacious company has been entirely re-costumed in brilliant and authentic garb, while Greco’s new choreography gives a different aspect to both the familiar and the novel dances.
