Fund Approves Merger To United Jewish Federation

To keep pace with a rapidly expanding Jewish community in San Diego County and the increased growth of Federation Agency services, the Board of Directors of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego approved the merger of the Fund and the San Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies into the United Jewish Federation.

After a year of study and more than 15 meetings by a joint committee of constituent agencies, the Fund and Federation, the new Constitution and By-Laws must now be approved by the Federation Board and those agencies who are now members.

The merger is now being studied by the three major constituent agencies – Jewish Social Service, Jewish Community Center, Hebrew Home for the Aged.

Membership, which provides “any Jewish person, 18 years of age or over, who has made a pledge to the Federation campaign during any calendar year, or during the calendar year preceding such membership year, and who does not have an unpaid pledge for any year prior to such preceding calendar year, shall be a member of the Federation for the membership year. The Board of Directors may extend the period of membership upon partial payment to apply on any unpaid pledge.”

Constituent agencies will be Jewish Social Service Agency, Jewish Community Center, San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged, Community Relations Council, North County Jewish Community Center, Jewish Welfare Board Armed Services Committee.

There are provisions for withdrawal, admission and expulsion of agencies.

Qualifications of constituent agencies are outlined. In the main it must be non-profit; conducting a definite program of health, guidance, counseling, welfare or recreational services; have a responsible governing board; been in operation long enough to have established continuity; the service must meet a community need not duplicating other services within the Jewish community and have a program whose quality and quantity justifies community expenditures.

Duties of the agencies are outlined including the fact that an agency shall not make any private drives for funds; expand or curtail its services without permission.

The governing body will be a board of directors of which two will be designated by each agency; 28 will be elected at large; one or more will be elected from areas outside the city; past presidents; Rabbis who accept the invitation and Jewish military chaplains who are invited. However, all Directors of the Federation must be members of the Federation irregardless of which group they come from.

Standing committees which will function under the new Federation are Executive, Social Planning, Budget, Allocation, Fund Raising, Personnel, Public Relations.

In the main the new By-Laws are a compilation of the by-laws of the United Jewish Fund and the Federation of Jewish Agencies.

Eli H. Levenson was Chairman of the committee. Other members were Milton Y. Roberts, Dr. A.P. Nasatir, Dr. Walter Ornstein, William R. Schwartz, William Colt, John Ruskin, Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Dr. Gerald Kobernick, Carl M. Esenoff, Morris W. Douglas, Mack Esterson, Irving Mortin, Maxwell Kaufman, Mrs. Henrietta Rubenstein. Albert Hutler was the staff member.

Professionals Boost U.J.F. Drive

San Diego’s professional men and women are working as a unit in the 1958 campaign with Dr. Joshua Rittoff as Chairman.

Campaign Chairman, Harry Wax, Martin Gleich, and Rabbi Morton J. Cohn, praised the divisions efforts and the role of its leaders for their desire to show what the professional group can do.

“All sections of the division’s work are under way,” Dr. Rittoff said. The Doctors and Accountants Division, headed by Dr. Harold Elden, and the Dentist Division led by Dr. Gerald Kobernick, have met. Workers in these divisions include Dr. Max Nelson, Dr. Albert Klug, Dr. Lawrence N. Solomon, Dr. Walter Ornstein, Dr. John Blumenthal, Dr. Harry Brookler, Dr. Sam Nuzie, Dr. Carl Lipschultz, Dr. William Berson, Dr. Richard Disraeli, Dr. Robert M. Stone, and Dr. Norman Mann.

Louis Karp has had a national meeting of the Lawyers Division whose workers are Louis S. Katz, Irwin Gostin, Howard Harris, Rock Zaitzow and Allan Rudick.

Dr. Harry Malin has had the Optometrists on the road for the past ten days. He is aided by Dr. Milton Schwartz.

Council Sabbath Set at Beth Israel

National Council of Jewish Women will observe its annual Council Sabbath, Friday evening, April 25, 8 p.m. at Temple Beth Israel, Third and Laurel Streets. Emphasizing Council’s dedication to service, Mrs. Audrey Coleman, President, will deliver a sermonette.

Mrs. Edwin Harris, Contemporary Jewish Affairs Chairman, announces that she is being assisted by Mrs. Earl Richmond and Mrs. Martin Ernest. Participating in the service will be Mmes. Harry Goodwin, Edwin Harris, Fritz Lavender, and Herbert Reder. Mrs. Floyd Kramer is Vice-President in charge.

A dance honoring the officers of the local chapter of AZA will be held at the San Diego Hotel on April 26th from 7:30 to 11:00 p.m. The local BBG has been invited.

On April 2nd and 3rd, Bartley Doctor and Frank Millman attended a study session on Judaism at the Mt. Vista Lodge in Los Angeles.

On March 31 Bartley Doctor, Jerry Karp and Barry Paisen helped the Jewish Community Center move to its new location on 54th Street.

Temple Beth Sholom Formed in Chula Vista

Temple Beth Sholom, a new synagogue located at 208 Madrona Street in Chula Vista, is open to all people interested in participating in its religious activities.

Sunday school classes are available to children of various age groups. Jewish history and Hebrew lessons are taught by accredited teachers.

At a meeting on Sunday, March 30, the following officers were elected: President, Sam Vener; Vice President, Dr. Aaron Mannis; Secretary, Michael Lexier, Treasurer, Phillip Barr.

The newly elected executive members re Sam Vener, Sam Shapov, Dr. Alvin May, Dr. Milton Lincoff, Dr. Oren Smith, Max Weinstock, Michael Lexier, Sidney Cornell, Sam Dimenstein, Capt. Arthur Friedman, Dr. Aaron Mannis, and Phillip Barr.

Dedication ceremonies for Temple Beth Sholom will take place in the near future.

Women’s Auxiliary Hebrew Home For Aged

Cele Feldman, President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged, invites members and their guests to attend the next regular luncheon meeting on Wednesday, April 23, at 11:45 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Home.

Cars will meet the bues at 54th and University and 54th and El Cajon.

Isabelle Tennebaum announces that a Rosh Chodesh Service will be held on April 19, at 9 a.m. The Minyons during Passover were very well attended, exceeding the necessary Quorum. Generous friends donate cakses for the Kiddush.

Rabbi Monroe Levens and Chaplain Elihu Rickel addressed the members of the Tifereth Israel Men’s Club at their installation of officers on March 29, at the El Cortez Hotel.

Outgoing president, Irving Dean, presented awards to J. David Brooks and Daniel Cheron for outstanding work on behalf of the club.

New officers installed were President, J. David Brooks; Vice Presidents, Al White, Arnold Gale and Sam Brenes, and Treasurer Ben Levenson.

Cantor Walter Flexo, a former student of the Talmudical Academy of Yeshiva University in New York, has been appointed to the cantorial pulpit of Temple Beth El, it has been announced by Max Vicker, president of the Clairemont Conservative Jewish synagogue.

Cantor Flexo will chant all Sabbath and holy day services and will be adviser to the Temple’s Hebrew and religious schools. Mr. Flexo was a chaplain’s assistant during the war and often served as acting chaplain for Jewish troops in the Admiralty Islands. He is a graduate of Brooklyn College with a degree in psychology and UCLA where he earned a degree in education.

The Cantor is the first religious counselor of the Temple which was organized last year to provide religious services for Jews of the beach and surrounding mesa communities. Temple Beth El is the first new Jewish congregation to be started in San Diego in the last 20 years.

“Peace of Mind” To Be Discussed

The book, “Peace of Mind,” by the late Rabbi Joshua Leibman, is the next selection of the Tifereth Israel Book Club, which will meet Tuesday, April 29, at 8 p.m. in the Tifereth Israel Lounge.

At this meeting, a symposium will discuss the various aspects of Rabbi Leibman’s book as they pertain tour daily living. Members of the panel are Ray Feurzeig, Ann Rubin and Rabbi Monroe Levens. Leading the discussion is Arthur Norris, instructor in philosophy, and well known in the San Diego area for his stimulating Great Books groups. Evelyn Ginsburg, Molly Samuels and Edythe Tessler are hostesses for the evening.

Those interested are cordially invited to attend.

The B’nai B’rith Girls held their last meeting at the new Jewish Community Center on April 7. A “Come as you are breakfast” and zoo excursion with free lunch are among the plans for the future.

A very successful bazaar was held last month with the B’nai B’rith adults.

Any girl between the ages of fourteen and eighteen who wishes to join may secure information by phoning Hanna Jo Schwartz, AT 2-6623 or they may sign up at the Jewish Community Center.

Bernheimer Selected As Volunteer of Month

Volunteer Edith Bernheimer was named as “Volunteer of the Month” for April by the Volunteer Bureau of the Community Welfare Council.

Honored by the presentation of a volunteer pin, Mrs. Bernheimer was selected for her two years of faithful service in the office of the United Jewish Fund and the Federation.

Mrs. Bernheimer, who recently celebrated her 80th birthday, has put in an average of four hours a day, five days a week, for the past two years, according to Rose Mishne, Office Manager.

In accepting the award she told her secret for staying young – “doing service for others.”
