WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release) –General Motors announced the results on Thurday, June 5,  of its internal report on ignition failures.   Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Illinois) issued the following statement in response to the announcement:

“The internal report released today on the General Motors ignition switch defect is very troubling.  It shows that the company, through a series of failures lasting more than ten years, repeatedly neglected to put the safety of its customers first.  At least 13 people – and perhaps many more – died because GM did not adequately value safety.

“GM must take full responsibility for failing to prevent these tragic deaths and many injuries.  The company must ensure that the victims’ fund is broad enough to properly compensate those affected.  It must also work quickly and deliberately to implement the recommendations of this report and all other necessary changes.  The trust of GM’s customers, going forward, depends on it.

“My colleagues and I are carefully reviewing the internal report, which raises additional questions that GM will need to address at an upcoming Energy and Commerce Committee hearing.  But we in Congress must also take action to ensure federal auto safety officials have the tools necessary to reduce the likelihood of future similar tragedies. All auto companies should ensure their cars are safe to drive – but if they fail to do so, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should have the authority and resources necessary to protect all Americans on our roads.

“To achieve this, I encourage all my colleagues to join me in fighting for urgently needed improvements to auto safety, including by working to pass H.R. 4364, the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2014, which would – among other things – increase the maximum penalty for failing to inform NHTSA and the public of potentially deadly auto defects.”
