SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — A front page story in the U-T, culled from wire services, told of the deal between Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and John McCain of Arizona to deal with the patient delays and misrepresentations at Veterans facilities across the nation.  One provision would let the VA fire employees it needed to, giving such employees a week to appeal their dismissals.  Another provision would permit veterans kept waiting more than 90 days for an appointment to utilize a non-VA provider.

The excitement continues to build for California Chrome’s Triple Crown attempt in the Belmont Stakes race to be run Saturday.  U-T sportswriter Matt Calkins says trainer Art Sherman always worries about Chrome becoming “anxious” in the starting gate.  He “spreads his front feet” and “just wants to get out of there,” said Sherman. ..  In another story, U-T writer Ed Zieralski reports that the size of the Belmont race track may not bother California Chrome, but it sure gives his assistant trainer, Alan Sherman, some pause.  “Just the size of this place is intimidating,” said Alan, who is the son of Art Sherman.  “I looked out at Chrome running and he looked like an ant out there. But he seemed to get used to it sooner than I did.” …In another story by Zieralski, U-T readers learned that Art and Alan have a new great-grandson and grandson respectively, born to Art’s daughter Brianne.  She decided to make her famous relatives’ last name her baby’s first name: Sherman.

In learning about D-Day from SDSU Prof. Jeffrey McIllwain, 11 students, who are touring Normandy Beach and other WWII sites, have heard about what the professor calls the “Spielberg Paradox,” after two movies brought to the screen by producer Steven Spielberg.  In a U-T story by John Wilken, McIllwain explains,  “The strong must be willing to endure the carnage seen in ‘Saving Private Ryan’ to stop the killing of the weak seen in ‘Schindler’s List.’” … In a letter to the editor, George Pichel, who said he landed at Omaha Beach eight days after D-Day, urged U-T readers “Let us not forget D-Day or the Holocaust.”

The U-T has a movie review of The Fault In Our Stars about two teens battling cancer in which there is a scene of them visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam  For reviewer Jocelyn Noveck of the AP, the scene “ feels uncomfortable—cheesy and, in its juxtapositions, somewhat tone-deaf.”  However, citizen critic Scotty Schuetz writes: “Scenes of Amsterdam are absolutely beautiful and even include seeing the actual house where Anne Frank hid in World War II.  Hope and a positive attitude, as well as many other life values, are explored in this film.”

Adi Shuruk, an Israeli now living in San Diego, is a competitor in the “Brother vs. Brother” home-remodeling competition reality show (HGTV) pitting teams captained by opposing twins Jonathan and Drew Scott, reports the U-T’s Karla Peterson.  Having been a paratrooper in the IDF, Shurak thought the  reality show would be relatively easy, “but it was definitely tougher than I thought it would be.”

Sheriff Bill Gore had an unhappy message for San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman: Two of her officers, husband and wife Bryce and Jennifer Charpentier, had been arrested on various drug charges. Zimmerman immediately revoked the two officers’ police powers and placed them on leave.

The U-T’s Bill Pinella, in his “From Pages Past” column noted that 30 years ago, then San Diego Clippers owner Donald Stirling was suing the San Diego Sports Arena for not maintaining a facility suitable for NBA games.  When he moved the franchise to Los Angeles (scene of  his later infamy for making racist remarks), Stirling cited the Sports Arena’s condition as one of his reasons.

Attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who administered the 9/11 victims fund pro bono and later performed similar service for victims of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, has been selected by General Motors to administer a fund for victims of defective ignition switches, Bloomberg News reported in the U-T.
