WASHINGTON, D.C.  (Press Release)– Congressman Eliot Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, urged Congress to find an immediate fix that would replenish the Highway Trust Fund before the current authorization expires.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx wrote a letter to transportation officials in all 50 states warning them that federal funding for road work, construction projects, and mass transit will soon be cut if Congress fails to renew authorization for the Highway Trust Fund.

“I have long called for increasing our investments in our aging infrastructure, rather than reduce already limited funds,” Engel said. “We can’t keep ignoring this very serious issue. If Congress doesn’t work to immediately replenish funding for the Highway Trust Fund, we’re going to have a serious problem on our hands next month. This funding is vital for building new bridges, repairing our highways, and enabling our trains to run on time.

“The New York State Department of Transportation estimates that over 12 percent of the state’s 17,000 bridges are structurally deficient and just over 27 percent are functionally obsolete, and now there’s no money for necessary repairs or upgrades.

“Congress needs to work towards a bipartisan solution so that states won’t face a critical shortfall in their transportation budgets. We have three weeks left to act, and we must do so with haste.”
