Twins debate secular versus observant lifestyles

san diego jewish academySAN DIEGO (Press Release)Jeff Deverett, a board Member and parent at San Diego Jewish Academy in Carmel Valley, will appear with his identical twin brother, Larry, at their book launch being held at SDJA on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 7:00 pm. In their book – Play or Pray – Jeff & Larry compare the quality & happiness of their lives and share their understanding of being tolerant and accepting of each other.

As mirror image identical twins Jeff and Larry Deverett look the same, talk the same, and are genetically the same . . . but there is one BIG difference. Jeff is a secular Jew who lives in San Diego and enjoys a wonderful “Southern California lifestyle.” Jeff is focused on the physical pleasures in life – “PLAY.” In contrast, LARRY is a Torah-observant Jew who lives in Bet Shemesh, Israel, and enjoys a deep connection to G-d and the Holy Land. Larry is focused on the spiritual pleasures in life – “PRAY.”

Despite their deep-rooted love for each other, for many years Jeff and Larry were in great conflict with their lifestyles and priorities. Now, in their early fifties, the brothers have learned how to respect, accept and even embrace each other’s lifestyles. What used to be a huge conflict of Orthodox vs. Non-Orthodox culture is now a source of depth and comfort in their lives.

In their new book, Play or Pray, Jeff and Larry compare the quality and happiness of their lives and share their understanding of being tolerant and accepting of each other.

“Our book is really about tolerance,” said Jeff Deverett. “Through our presentation, we hope to impart our lessons learned to others and do so in an entertaining way.”

Their book is aimed at Jews of all denominations and religious orientations and for anyone who wants to see tolerance in action.

Jeff and Larry are both articulate and dynamic speakers who represent their chosen lifestyles with great passion and conviction. Jeff represents the secular Jewish way of life – he believes that the essence of being Jewish is tradition, culture, and a sense of belonging to Jewish heritage. Larry represents the observant Jewish way of life – he believes that strict adherence to the laws and precepts of the Torah lead to a more engaging and rewarding life.

Their presentation begins with several entertaining and comical “twin switch” stories; funny, amusing and 100% true. They then tell a bit about their business backgrounds and their family lives. And then they engage in a thought-provoking discussion about “Secular vs. Observant” priorities and lifestyles.

Their topics include:

What is the purpose of life? What does it mean to be a good person? Where are we going when we die? Was the Torah a divine document from God? Who has a better life; Secular or Orthodox?
This presentation is engaging for all people who have ever questioned the role that religion plays in their lives. High school students and young adults who are in the process of exploring and setting their religious priorities will be very intrigued by the two perspectives being presented.

“Many audiences have commented that this is one of the most entertaining and engaging presentations that they have ever seen.

The presentation is free, however, you must register in advance at www.eventbrite.com (just search the site for “Play or Pray”)
