SAN DIEGO (Press Release)– On the Go: Transportation Solutions for Older Adults, a program of Jewish Family Service of San Diego, delivered its 200,000th ride Thursday, August 28,  to more than 50 older adults who were going on an organized excursion to enjoy front-row seats at the Festival of Sail’s Tall Ship Parade. Founded in 2008, On the Go helps older adults stay mobile, independent, and connected to their community by providing transportation to medical appointments, social & wellness centers, religious services, shopping centers, and social/cultural events.

Joining JFS in the celebrations were Sachiko Kohatsu from Supervisor Dave Roberts’ office, Allison Don from Senator Marty Block’s office, Brian Lane and Dave Schumacher from SANDAG, Melanie Rubin from the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center and Steve Ewart from RideScheduler.

Nurgesh Surti, age 81, said: “This is the best thing that has happened to seniors. I really depend on On the Go. They take care of me when I am going somewhere, take me on trips with my friends, and take me to get better when I’m not feeling well. I’m so thankful.”

On the Go, a community program operated by Jewish Family Service and funded by Charitable Adult Rides & Services, SANDAG and the Jewish Federation of San Diego County, helps bring independence, community connection, mobility, and dignity to older San Diegans who can no longer drive or have limited driving capabilities. The program began a decade ago in a single zip code with 5 riders and 12 volunteers. Today, it has proudly grown to 23 zip codes with nearly 300 volunteers. Over 3,500 older adults have enrolled in On the Go and have accessed a host of transportation options including shuttles, excursions, and, most importantly, the largest volunteer driving program in the San Diego.

Jewish Family Service places a focus on Supporting Aging With Dignity. The 200,000th ride is a celebration of that commitment.

Jewish Family Service looks to the community for support to continue to provide this vital service. To become a volunteer or for additional information about On the Go: Transportation Solutions for Older Adults, please call (858) 637-7320 or visit www.jfssd.org/onthego.
