Humoring the Headlines: September 26, 2014

SAN DIEGO─ The first female pilot from the United Arab Emirates participated in the bombing sorties against ISIS in Syria.  The UAE news agency refers to her as the country’s veiled threat.

Dick Cheney criticized President Obama for mentioning the racial tension in Ferguson during his UN speech this week.  According to Cheney, the shooting of Michael Brown was justified on national security grounds because there was intelligence that he was carrying a weapon of mass destruction.

John Boehner said Congress will not pass a new authorization of military force resolution until a presumably more Republican Congress convened next January.  Ted Cruz echoed this sentiment by recommending that the President postpone nominating a new Attorney General until the Republicans gain a majority in the Senate in this year’s elections.  These delays are contingent on the passage of the 28th Amendment which reads, “The President should refrain from introducing any new legislation when his party controls one or both houses of Congress.”

Public opinion polls indicate that 70 % of Americans disapprove of the job Congressional Republicans have been doing, but also predict that Republicans will increase their majority in the House and win a majority in the Senate in this year’s elections.   Although political analysts can’t explain this discrepancy, psychiatrists attribute it to the syndrome of spouses and partners remaining in abusive relationships.

Although an international consensus has emerged that ISIS, ISIL, or IS must be combated, there is no agreement over what the acronym for the movement is and what the letters stand for.  Does IS mean Intolerant Slaughterers?  Does ISIS mean Inciting Sunnis in Savagery? Does ISIL mean Intransigent Soldiers Inflicting Liquidation?
