Nov. 7-8 Shabbaton to recall Shlomo Carlebach

young israel of san diegoSAN DIEGO (SDJW)–The twentieth anniversary of the death of the singing rabbi, Reb. Shlomo Carlebach, will be memorialized with a Shabbaton Nov 7-8 at Young Israel of San Diego, 7289 Navajo Road, in the San Carlos section of San Diego. The yahrzeit of Carlebach’s death falls this year on Nov. 9, 1994.

The Shabbaton will include an instrumental Kabbalat Shabbat through the singing of Licha Dodi in the Friday night service; a catered meal; and a lecture by Rabbi Ariel Shalem, scholar in residence, about the life and works of Rabbi Carlebach. Friday night’s menu, $22 or $25 for individuals (depending on age) or $80-$90 for families, will include challah rolls, gefilte fish, root soup, sweet and sour meaballs, zucchini souffle, roasted postatoes, green beans with sesame, desserts with fruit and assorted beverages.

On Saturday morning, the service utilizing Carlebach tunes will be followed by a catered Shabbat lunch, with Rabbi Shalem lecturing thereafter on the power and history of music and song in Judaism. That evening there will be a Carlebach Havdalah ceremony, followed with a Malevah Malka.

Saturday’s luncheon menu, priced at $25-$27 for individuals and $85-$95 for families, includes challah rolls, tuna salad, egg salad, coleslaw, pickled platter, Moroccan carrot salad, chick pea salad, Mediterranean pasta salad, corn souffle, cholen, desserts with fruit and assorted beverages.
