SAN DIEGO (SDJW)– Carol and Harvey Korfin are both artisans who will be displaying their creations at the Temple Emanu-El artisan festival on Sunday, Nov. 2. Their creations reflect their different interests

Carol, who markets her glass creations under the name “The Glass Giraffe,” says no two pieces of her fused glass art are alike. “Judaica is one of my specialties,” she adds. “I have always loved the work of Gary Rosenthal and Tamara Baskin, two well known names in Glass Judaica. They have inspired me to spread my wings and create in glass what lives in my mind. I make holiday items like menorahs, dreidels, apple & honey dishes. I do Shabbat items like candlesticks and talit clips. I do themed pieces like Tree of Life, Pomegranate, Hamsa pieces. And I do pendants with Mogen Davids, Chais and Shins on them. And I do mezuzahs that make wonderful, unique gifts.”

Harvey “upcycles old computer boards and CD’s into clocks,” which he calls “Tic Toc Tech.” Some of these creations, notes Carol, “are Jewish themed and some we have collaborated on combining his boards with my glass.”

The couple have made art their new vocations in their retirement years, spending “many weekends where we sell our work and enjoy meeting new people,” says Carol. “Because my banner that hangs on my booth says ‘Judaica’ on it, we always have conversations with locals about ‘being one of the tribe’ and it’s a lot of fun playing Jewish geography.

The Korfins will be among 55 artists participating in the festival to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m on Sunday. Special for the occasion, the Temple Gift Shop at 6299 Capri Drive will have a sale with items priced at 50 percent of the regular price.
