SDHRC honors Hunger Advocacy Network

Jewish Family Service San DiegoSAN DIEGO (Press Release)– The San Diego Human Relations Commission (SDHRC) has chosen to honor the Hunger Advocacy Network (HAN) as one of the recipients of its 2014 Commission Partner Awards. Jewish Family Service (JFS) serves as the Network’s neutral convener and the Leichtag Foundation has provided generous funding to support the Network. The SDHRC recognizes the Network’s collaborative work toward reducing barriers, enhancing awareness and increasing access to food assistance programs.

The Hunger Advocacy Network is a collaborative of 21 San Diego organizations, including human service agencies, food banks and advocacy organizations. These organizations work together to achieve a long-term, systemic reduction of food insecurity in San Diego by shaping state policy. The SDHRC is one of the Partner organizations that make up the Network.

“It is a great honor to receive the 2014 Commission Partner Award.” said Kristen Aster, Manager of the Hunger Advocacy Network, “The Network has empowered a strong coalition of partners who have increased awareness of hunger issues in San Diego County and made an impact on government policies that reduce hunger. We are focused on continuing to make a meaningful impact in our community by shaping state policy.”

HAN received the award at a special event that took place on November 18, 2014, which included a recognition ceremony and a reception. The SDHRC presented its annual Keith M. Turnham Humanitarian Award to Mr. Hernan Luis y Prado, its Business Diversity Award to UC San Diego Health System, its Commission Partner Awards to HAN, KPBS, and Ms. Summer Stefan, Chief Deputy District Attorney, and its Human Relations Commission Commendations to Ms. Tinesia Conwright, Ms. Jamie Quient, Pastor Richard “Cisco” Mendez, Todo Mundo and Mr. Aldo Sanchez.
