‘Good Deeds Day’ March 15 will have arts focus

jewish Federation of SD CountySAN DIEGO (Press Release) – The Women’s Philanthropy Division of the Jewish Federation of San Diego County is orchestrating a community wide art drive, dubbed Art from the Heart, in recognition of this year’s International Good Deeds Day, which will come to full fruition on March 15. Through collaboration with several community partners, Federation will be collecting donations that will benefit programs that focus on childhood, parental, and family development, including Positive Parenting, Supporting Jewish Single Parents, and Jewish BIGPals along with several local Food Assistance programs. Federation will also be collecting fleece blankets for Ronald McDonald House Charities San Diego, which provides much needed support to families with children in local hospitals.

On March 15, Federation is calling on hundreds of teens from all over San Diego to come together at the Lawrence Family JCC to take part in JSERVE – an international day of youth service, coinciding with Good Deeds Day.

Teens will meet at the JCC, receive lunch, go to one of the multiple service sites, and participate in a community service project of their choosing. For more information and to register, visit: www.lfjcc.org/jserve2015. Participating teens will choose to volunteer in the following activities:

• Blanket making for Ronald McDonald House with residents of the Vi— a local retirement community

• Art therapy with elderly residents at Seacrest Village— a senior housing and healthcare organization

• Arts and crafts with children at Promises2Kids—a child abuse prevention foundation and advocacy organization for children in foster care

In the weeks leading up to Good Deeds Day, Federation will collect as many art supplies as possible throughout town at the more than 10 drop-off locations. Federation’s goal is to raise $3,000 to purchase art supplies and an additional $3,000 to purchase blankets for Ronald McDonald house – a critical need for the organization as it goes through more than 100 blankets per month! Donations will be accepted at www.jewishinsandiego.org/gooddeeds

“I am thrilled to be involved in this incredible day of giving back to my local community, as it means a great deal to me,” said Britney Ewing, volunteer and co-chair of Good Deeds Day. “Each year, I look forward to coordinating Good Deeds Day because it’s wonderful to witness hundreds of teens coming together to work with multiple generations to benefit local Jewish organizations and the entire community of San Diego as a whole – the positive impact that is created on just one day of the year is truly magnificent.”

The collection of art supplies will begin on February 10 and will go through March 10, and bins will be located throughout town at partner organizations, including the JCC, San Diego Jewish Academy, major Congregations, Temples, and religious schools.
