Guilty verdict for Boston Marathon bomber

ADL logoBOSTON (Press Release) — The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) welcomed the announcement of the Wednesday, April 8, guilty verdict in the Boston Marathon bombing case. A federal jury found Dzhokar Tsarnaev guilty on all counts.

“The jury’s guilty verdict against Dzhokar Tsarnaev sends a resounding message that those who engage in such acts of terrorism will be held accountable and pay a hefty price,” said Robert O. Trestan, ADL New England Regional Director. “It is clear the jury agreed with the prosecution’s assessment that Tsarnaev and his brother worked together in plotting a coldblooded, intentional, calculated terrorist act and he therefore should be held to account for his actions.”

Trestan added, “The reality that Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother were radicalized, at least in part, by online terrorist propaganda geared toward young American audiences, shows the seriousness of the threat from Islamic extremists. Terrorist groups are now able to reach, recruit and motivate extremists more quickly and effectively than ever before. We hope this case does not end with Tsarnaev and his brother. What is needed now is a concerted effort among law enforcement agencies, empowered by political and government leaders, to place a renewed emphasis on investigating and prosecuting would-be terrorists before they can launch another attack on American soil.”

According to ADL’s Center on Extremism, the horrific attack committed at the Boston Marathon did not happen in a vacuum. Since the bombing nearly two years ago, there have been at least four domestic plots in the U.S. similarly motivated by radical interpretations of Islam, and, including Tsarnaev, 15 teenagers, including six minors, have been linked to terror activity since 2013. The verdict comes at a time when Americans motivated by radical interpretations of Islam are being arrested on terror related charges nearly every week.

ADL commended U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz for her leadership and steadfast commitment to pursue justice on behalf of the victims and everyone impacted by the terror attack.

AJCThe American Jewish Committee (AJC) also praised a federal jury for convicting Dzhokhar Tsarnaev of carrying out the deadly terrorist bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. Together with his brother, Tamerlan, who died in a police shootout following the attack, Tsarnaev perpetrated the worst terror assault on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001.

“The horror carried out by the Tsarnaev brothers was a wake-up call that Americans must be vigilant and united in confronting the ongoing threat of jihadist terrorism that  continues to challenge our country and the larger world,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris.

“While the guilty verdict is very important in bringing some justice, we will forever remember the victims — Martin Richard, Krystle Campbell, and Lu Lingzi who perished in the bombings, as well as Sean Collier, the MIT campus officer shot dead, and the more than 240 who were wounded, many with significant injuries.”
