SAN DIEGO — When Jewish Family Service announced the College Avenue Center would move Sept. 1 from Beth Jacob Congregation to Temple Emanu-El–with hot kosher lunches to be prepared at the JFS campus on Balboa Avenue–Leopoldo Kahn raised the issue of whether Orthodox lunch patrons would be left out.

He explained that whereas the JFS kitchen is under the supervision of a mashgiach from the Conservative movement, such supervision is not recognized by the Orthodox Va’ad, which oversees kashrut at many community functions. So, he asked, will that mean that Orthodox seniors, in essence, will be excluded from the hot lunch program?

Contacted by San Diego Jewish World, Dana Toppel, JFS chief program officer, responded: “JFS is currently researching options for glatt kosher meals that will be available upon request. We will continue to work to meet the varied needs of all clients.”
