FBI’s special agent in charge speaks at Tifereth Israel

eric birnbaumSAN DIEGO  (Press Release)– The Brotherhood of Tifereth Israel Synagogue will host the FBI’s Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego Division, Eric Birnbaum, Ph.D, at a kosher deli dinner open to both men and women beginning at 6:15 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, at the synagogue, 6660 Cowles Mountain Blvd.

Birnbaum, whose PhD in physical chemistry is from Stanford University, will speak approximately at 7:15 p.m.  A dinner ticket costs $15 with an RSVP to 619-697-6001 or mensclub@tiferethisrael.com, whereas the price is $17 for those who come without reservations. Those who RSVP should  do so by Monday, Nov. 2, and please state whether they prefer a meat or vegetarian selection.

Birnbaum, who served previously in the administrative division of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, was appointed as special agent in charge in San Diego in October 2014.  He began his career with the FBI in 1988, working in Washington on white collar and violent crime.  In 1992, Birnbaum became a firearms examiner in the FBI Laboratory, managing an initiative that used computer imaging technology to link evidence from serial shooting crimes.

In 1997, according to a biography prepared by the FBI, he served as assistant inspector in the Inspection Division, auditing FBI operations nationwide.  In 1999, he did his first tour in San Diego, heading a white collar crime squad.   In 2003, he transferred to San Francisco to head the intelligence, criminal and SWAT programs there.   In 2007, he became deputy assistant director of the FBI Laboratory, dealing with budget, human resources, research, strategy and security activities.  Among his projects was the development of protocols for handling evidence contaminated by chemical, biological, radiological and/ or nuclear materials.

In 2009, he returned to the Inspection Division to lead one of eight teams focusing on streamlining the FBI’s operations.  He was named chief inspector in 2012.
