Author to explore Jewish connections to Star Trek

black fireCHULA VISTA, California (SDJW) – Sonni Cooper, an author who wrote Star Trek novels, will be the guest speaker at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Temple Beth Shalom, 208 Madrona Street.

Rabbi Michael Leo Samuel said that Cooper, the author of the Star Trek novel Black Star in which Spock is accused of being a traitor to the Federation, will explore with him the Jewish connections to Star Trek.

Such connections not only include the fact that the original series’ stars – William Shatner as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock – were Jewish, but also that some of the plots drew on biblical and Holocaust themes.

The discussion, to be held in the Conservative congregation’s social hall, is free and open to the public.
