WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry issued the following statement on Thursday, April 28:

On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I offer my warmest congratulations to the citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands on the 37th anniversary of your nation’s independence this May 1.

Brought together by history and shared values, Americans and Marshallese work closely on great challenges: combating climate change, protecting our ocean, and creating a brighter future for all our citizens. We study together, do business across the ocean, and protect each other, with many citizens of the Marshall Islands serving honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces.

These people-to-people ties form the foundation of our relationship, and will keep it strong far into the future. We look forward to continuing to work with you on public health, disaster preparedness, maritime security, and sustainable economic development.

We wish the people of the Marshall Islands both at home and in the United States peace, prosperity, and best wishes in the coming year.
