Supreme Court Tied On Obama’s Immigration Executive Action

The Supreme Court announced Thursday that it was deadlocked in a 4-4 tie in a decision Monday on the immigration policies of U.S. President Barack Obama. The decision effectively blocks Obama’s action, allowing an appeals court decision to stand. The case was heard in April and many expected the 4-4 tie on Obama’s 2014 Deferred Action…

Following today’s Supreme Court decision on President Obama’s executive actions on immigration, Stosh Cotler, CEO of Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice, issued the following statement:

“We are dismayed that our deadlocked Supreme Court failed to provide much-needed relief to millions of immigrant families. Our immigration system has crumbled to the point of cruelty, forcing millions of people to live in fear of detention, deportation, discrimination, and separation from their loved ones. These men, women, and children are our neighbors, friends, and classmates, and they deserve a chance to live and work free of fear in this country, just as many of our own Jewish ancestors did when they came to America to forge a better life. That’s why we will continue to fight alongside our immigrant brothers and sisters to prevent unnecessary and cruel deportations. The only way to fundamentally reform our broken immigration system so it reflects our American values of liberty and justice for all is to pass comprehensive immigration reform.”

Bend the Arc has helped lead the American Jewish community’s advocacy around the issue of immigration reform. Bend the Arc has arranged meetings between Jewish leaders and congressional staff, hosted immigration-themed Shabbats, organized petitions, and participated in marches, vigils, and town halls to deliver the message that immigration reform is a top priority for Jewish voters. In October 2013, Bend the Arc’s Rabbi-in-Residence Jason Kimelman-Block was arrested at a national demonstration for immigration reform alongside members of Congress during an act of civil disobedience on the National Mall, and other Bend the Arc leaders have been arrested at subsequent events.

  2. California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez issued the following statement:

    – California Assembly Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) made the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court’s 4-4 deadlocked decision in United States v Texas temporarily blocked implementation of executive orders by President Obama on immigration enforcement.

“My heart breaks for the millions of our country’s residents who live every day in fear of a deportation order that will rip their families apart and who will once again have to wait for justice. But, history is long and I remain confident that today’s decision is not a defeat but a delay. This ongoing gridlock is another reminder of how critical it is for the U.S. Senate to finally fill the lingering vacancy on the Supreme Court and allow the nation to move forward with definitive rulings on how the laws of the land apply to modern realities, and I look forward to the U.S. Senate eventually doing its duty to allow our country to move forward.”
