Magen David Adom rushes blood to Israeli in Peru

TEL AVIV, Israel (Press Release)– Magen David Adom, with the coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been flying blood units to Lima, Peru, in order to save the life of Zohar Katz, an Israeli traveler who is hospitalized there in severe condition. On Thursday, MDA paramedic Yonat Daskal took 100 blood units and plasma and will be joining a senior MDA hematologist who arrived there Wednesday.

As soon as MDA became aware of her situation, the traveler’s family was contacted and were able to link Prof. Eilat Shinar, Director of Blood Services at MDA, with the doctors in Peru in order to receive the relevant authorizations to deliver the blood. Since that time, MDA prepared dozens of blood components and packed them in the proper manner in order for them to remain in the suitable temperature.

Hopefully, these blood units will help stabilize Zohar’s condition, allowing an MDA delegation to bring her back to Israel, for further treatment.

MDA Director General, Eli Bin: “During the past few days, we have been running an intricate operation against the clock, with the help of our hematologist in Lima. This was a complicated process which required many approvals and authorizations, and we are glad to have gotten the green light. The MDA doctor and paramedic who have been sent to Peru are doing everything in their power to look after Zohar. We all hope that this will assist in stabilizing her condition, and eventually in bringing her back home. MDA will continue to do anything possible to save human lives- in Israel and across the world.”
