Washington, DC – Americans for Peace Now (APN) strongly condemns the shooting attack this morning at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount / Haram al-Sharif. APN sends its condolences to the families of the two Israeli policemen who were killed in the attack, both Arab Druze citizens of Israel, and wishes full recovery to a third police officer who was injured in the attack.
APN implores the Israeli authorities, the Palestinian Muslim clerics in Jerusalem, the government of Jordan, the Israeli and Palestinian publics, and all other stakeholders in Jerusalem, to do all they can to prevent further escalation in Jerusalem, particularly at this highly sensitive and holy spot, and to respect the sanctity of Jerusalem’s holy sites.
In that vein, APN welcomes Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ swift condemnation of the attack in a phone call to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, as well as Netanyahu’s assurance that despite the attack, Israel will adhere to the “status quo” on the Temple Mount. APN calls on the authorities in Israel to respond to the attack in a calm and measured manner.
Like the two victims of today’s attack, the three gunmen were Arab citizens of Israel. They reportedly shot the police officers from very close range. Such an attack, at the holiest site to Judaism and the third holiest site to Islam, is extremely unusual, if not unprecedented. All stakeholders in Jerusalem must do their utmost so it never happens again.
Jerusalem, July 14, 2017 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today released the following statement following the deadly terror attack near the Temple Mount, which killed two Israeli police officers and left a third injured. The three perpetrators, from the Israeli Arab village of Umm al-Fahm, started shooting at a group of police who were standing outside the compound. After they attacked, they ran back inside the holy site and were shot by Israeli security forces. The victims, Hayel Satawi, 30, and Kamil Shanan, 22, were members of Israel’s Druze community.
Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO, and Carole Nuriel, Director of ADL’s Israel Office, issued the following statement:
We strongly condemn this terror attack on Israeli law enforcement officers, carried out by those seeking to sow violence and turmoil and disrupt the fragile status quo at one of the most religiously sensitive sites in the world.
For decades, there has been unceasing incitement against Israel, rife with false allegations about policies and actions in Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount, from Palestinian and Israeli Arab religious and political leaders.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appropriately condemned the attack in a phone call to Prime Minister Netanyahu. But he and other Palestinian and Arab political and religious leaders must now take concrete action to curb anti-Israel incitement.
We send our deepest condolences to the families of those killed, as well as to the entire Israeli National Police force community, and hope for the quick recovery of those injured.
