SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — Cindy Marten, the superintendent of city schools, will address a dessert reception of the Tifereth Israel Synagogue Men’s Club at 7 p.m., Sunday, August 18.

The public is invited to attend Marten’s talk in which she has been asked to discuss security at the city’s schools as well as any recent educational innovations.

Marten, whose mother Fern Siegel has served as president both of Temple Emanu-El and Jewish Family Service, has a varied educational background.

She was a teacher, instructional leader, and principal at Central Elementary School, helping to increase the schools student achievement ratings during her tenure.

“As the district’s superintendent, Marten leads the district team and community with a singular focus on student success,” according to the district’s website.

“She believes that there are no excuses when it comes to providing children with the very best conditions that will enable them to become confident, successful learners who can achieve their dreams. Marten is working with the Board of Education to implement Vision 2020, creating quality schools in every neighborhood throughout the district.”

The general public is invited to her speech, for which admission of $10 at the door will be charged to defray the cost of refreshments and of security.  Sue Braun, a former member of the San Diego School Board, will provide the introduction.

Tifereth Israel Synagogue, a Conservative congregation, is located at 6660 Cowles Mountain Boulevard.
