I grew up in Presbyterian churches in Canada, which were generally a loving and benign environment, but it galls me now to remember the way we were taught as children that other faiths — sorry, "myths", as they were called, as if ours wasn't a myth — were faulty, illogical (!), and required our intervention, lest the practitioner follow his or her error all the way to a literal Hell.

Today I'm told there's a larger, more pluralistic attitude, that there could, perhaps, be different faces of the same God. But to the point of this article, I think that you make a good argument, and that we would do well to un-conflate faith and race, and examine our prejudices about both.

And this cuts both ways: there's a groundswell of support for a very materialistic sort of atheism at the moment. Inherent in that is a scornful dismissal of people of any faith, as if belief in anything beyond a scientifically reducible world is childish and imbecilic (though this insistence on science as the ultimate lowest common denominator is usually held by non-scientists; those at its outer reaches communicate with far more wonder and openness, and far less certainty).

Faith only becomes a problem when it insists itself upon others, when it shifts from the personal realm and starts seeking conversion, unchallenged acceptance, empire. As the professor said above, at least race is free from proseltysation.

Princeton professor reads this and tells me: ''Well written, Mr Bloom, but there's a difference. For the racist, the enemy can't reform by joining the favored people. A black person can't convert to white-ism. But in faithist Imperial Russia, for example, Jewish converts could rise to the highest offices. Faithism can be a way to coerce joining the group, as in the pressure on Christians in some Muslim states today, not to keep them subordinate. (Actually in the Balkans, Turkish rulers sometimes made it hard for Christians to convert, but that was mainly to be able to continue collecting higher taxes. It wasn't that they were thought incapable of being Muslims.) Of major faiths, only Zoroastrians are truly faithist in banning converts and in not recognizing children of mixed marriages as members of the community. But Zoroastrians have not had any political power for at least 1200 years. So while racist and faithist rhetoric may often be similar, there is a difference between rejecting somebody's perceive innate qualities and their choice of belief.''

Leah,
As usual your piece on Dr. Kretzer was very well written and very moving. Dr. Krezter sounds like a very fine man and has the wisdom and love to carry on the Jewish traditions of his family. Thank you for writing this beautiful writing piece, Leah.

Hi Kimberly and Haliegh! It sounds like Haleigh has had a long fulfilling life as a service dog for you! That is so sweet that you pull her around the lake. Sorry it took so long to respond, but I just saw your post. You can find me on Facebook as Finnegan or Finnegan McNeil and on Yelp as Finnegan if you want to learn more about my adventures as a service dog.

Assad claims he will fire missles upon Tel-Aviv if western forces try to bring down his government, Isaiah 17th chapter states Damascus will be destroyed in one day. This prophecy was written some 2,600 years ago. Israel will have to take out Damascus and the Hezbullah before hitting Iran's nuclear sites and Iran/Persia is listed by the prophet Ezekiel in Ezekiel 38:5

The Jewish prophets seem to be quite accurate.

Natasha: I read your both Paths To Power back in the early 80s. It was like a 2d Bible to me. In that book, you were pretty insistent that women could "have it all" and I believed it to. Nice to see someone from that era finally admitting it's not true...and never was.

Congressman Filner energized the adults and children of our Congregation by making powerful connections to King and to his own personal quest. It is rare that a politician be so passionate about freedom, justice, and other issues that remain endemic in today's world.

He is spreading near-heresy, and he is being treated better than he should be.
Unbelievably some are even sticking up for him!
As far as Hebrew Union College, JTS etc., there's nothing Jewish about them (other than the actual people there), its all apikursos.

So everyone who disagrees with you is draconian?
Because we disagree with Shmuly and hence ban his book, we're draconian?

Your a typical liberal lefty.. Everybody and everything must have its time of day, right? Wrong! That's Liberalism, NOT Judaism!
As M. "Savage" says: "liberalism is a mental disorder"!

The Torah has ZERO tolerance for Avoda Zoroh and Minnus, I'm talking about the ancient Torah, the ever-present eternal Torah, not the DEformed Moses Mendelson/Spinoza Torah. There are no more Mendelson's, why? Because reformists (or rather deformist's) eventually assimilate.

Religiously observant Jews believe in the Torah, and the Torah is more than Tikkun Olam, (an expression that's about the only 2 hebrew words reform kids learn if they go to a Jewish day school). Some deformist picked up on 2 words, distorted them, and those are the only 2 words they preach.. What happened to the rest of the Torah/Talmud? Oh i forgot, that's for the cave men!

Oh my, as I'm writing this now, i decided to Google you, as Iv'e never heard of you before (somehow i just stumbled upon your article). Now, when i read your past (Kfar Chabad...), I'm like uh oh, why did i just waste my time.. delete the whole thing, but Iv'e come to the conclusion that your so many years in your hole, that you've long lost your way..

So getting back to Shmuly, I don't understand your problem. There are Rabbis, Rabbi Shuchat, a man who knows the "new testament" inside out, a man who actually read Shmully's book, has given a Psak Din that we may not buy or read this book, period.

What's so bad about that, it's not open enough for you?
You expected that in Kfar Chabad you should be reading brit chadash and they will give you a pat on the back?

My friend, realize that the Shulchan Aruch forbids one to read certain subjects, so what is so "draconian" if the Rabbi's determine that a certain book goes inti that category?
If you believe it's the Shulchan Aruch that's draconian then I guess we all are, and there's no hope, because then by orthodox by the very definition are draconian, because the shulchan arukh is!
So we're a lost case..

---
Scrolling through your blog, I see the way you write about the Israel "Chareidim situation", and you do the typical thing all the Chilonim media do, you paint the whole Chareidi population as making
"-A ban on mannequins.
-The Personal Mechitza, which is a small partition Haredi Jews wear around their heads when travelling on El Al Airlines. The PM prevents Haredim from gazing at the lovely El Al Stewardesses. It comes in only one color: black.
Women must sit at the back of the bus!
-How to attack Modern Orthodox girls walking to elementary school.
-How to attack wheelchair bound children on Shabbat!"

I call that hate speech, taking what a few meshugoyim do, and painting everyone else with that is a crime. This is waaay worse than anything you said vis-a-vis the Boteach book. For this alone I consider you to be a Chareidi-hater anti semite!
No, I won't ever call you nazi, but i can see you drawing very similar cartoons portraying religious Jews, you wouldn't hesitate one bit. It seems like you have some deep seated hatred from your youth that won't go away.

I still love you!

He is spreading near-heresy, and he is being treated better than he should be.
Unbelievably some are even sticking up for him!
As far as Hebrew Union College, JTS etc., there’s nothing Jewish about them (other than the actual people there), its all apikursos.

So everyone who disagrees with you is draconian?
Because we disagree with Shmuly and hence ban his book, we’re draconian?

Your a typical liberal lefty.. Everybody and everything must have its time of day, right? Wrong! That’s Liberalism, NOT Judaism!
As M. “Savage” says: “liberalism is a mental disorder”!

The Torah has ZERO tolerance for Avoda Zoroh and Minnus, I’m talking about the ancient Torah, the ever-present eternal Torah, not the DEformed Moses Mendelson/Spinoza Torah. There are no more Mendelson’s, why? Because reformists (or rather deformist’s) eventually assimilate.

Religiously observant Jews believe in the Torah, and the Torah is more than Tikkun Olam, (an expression that’s about the only 2 hebrew words reform kids learn if they go to a Jewish day school). Some deformist picked up on 2 words, distorted them, and those are the only 2 words they preach.. What happened to the rest of the Torah/Talmud? Oh i forgot, that’s for the cave men!

Oh my, as I’m writing this now, i decided to Google you, as Iv’e never heard of you before (somehow i just stumbled upon your article). Now, when i read your past (Kfar Chabad…), I’m like uh oh, why did i just waste my time.. delete the whole thing, but Iv’e come to the conclusion that your so many years in your hole, that you’ve long lost your way..

So getting back to Shmuly, I don’t understand your problem. There are Rabbis, Rabbi Shuchat, a man who knows the “new testament” inside out, a man who actually read Shmully’s book, has given a Psak Din that we may not buy or read this book, period.

What’s so bad about that, it’s not open enough for you?
You expected that in Kfar Chabad you should be reading brit chadash and they will give you a pat on the back?

My friend, realize that the Shulchan Aruch forbids one to read certain subjects, so what is so “draconian” if the Rabbi’s determine that a certain book goes inti that category?
If you believe it’s the Shulchan Aruch that’s draconian then I guess we all are, and there’s no hope, because then by orthodox by the very definition are draconian, because the shulchan arukh is!
So we’re a lost case..

—
Scrolling through your blog, I see the way you write about the Israel “Chareidim situation”, and you do the typical thing all the Chilonim media do, you paint the whole Chareidi population as making
“-A ban on mannequins.
-How to attack wheelchair bound children on Shabbat!”

I call that hate speech, taking what a few meshugoyim do, and painting everyone else with that is a crime. This is waaay worse than anything you said vis-a-vis the Boteach book. For this alone I consider you to be a Chareidi-hater anti semite!

Good observations, Don (as always). But maybe this saga demonstrates one thing: that the focus of the community went the wrong way. While many people were busy getting all upset about the Mount Soledad Cross and Nativity Scene in Balboa Park, a far more important issue went completely unattended by the same JCRC mentioned in the article (and everyone else for that matter): the infiltration of the Palestinians into the House of Pacific Relations community (the famous international houses, of which the House of Israel is a proud member). So now here we are today, with a Palestinian "House", which is incidentally another blatant lie since they don't have a "house" as such (despite their claims to the contrary on their web site), but rather a simple little display window in the main building or the House of Pacific Relations nearby. Where was the JCRC then? Where was the community? No one paid any attention! Now we're stuck with it. Go try to evict the Palestinian "House", as fictional as it is, from the HPR. Good luck. Note however that the HPR is not consistent: among the actual houses, we have Porto-Rico and Scotland, both of which are not sovereign nations any more than "Palestine" is. So the logical course of action for the JCRC, if it wants to prove the value of its rebirth, would be to right that wrong caused by past negligence mixed with obsession with far less consequential issues, and obtain that all three be evicted from the HPR.

Gary, a bit alarmist, but still a good point. Paul's libertarianism appeals to many Republicans, esp. among more of the young than mature, experienced adults. Most Americans favor Israel, but it is not a top issue. It's not that Paul has any chances, but he does surface -- and for some make respectable -- abandinment of Israel. -- Also, to the extent that withdrawal from extended foreign affairs has gained currency among Republicans, much of it comes from the sacrifices so made being abandoned and denigrated by Democrats. Republicans have been stalwart up to now, while Democrats have waffled or thrown in the towel time after time. -- I look forward to how you treat the more serious, however, rot at the core of the Democratic Party, where the Obama administration's think tank and recruiting center , Center for American Progress, spews anti-Israel writings, even being denounced by the (liberal leaning) major Jewish organizations.

Mimi, thank you for the continuing story on Bob Gannon and his travel to the Middle East. I am certain that many if not most of the people living in that region are peace-loving and would happily live together but for the politics of resource management (in all its forms). I am curious if he visited Iran and his reception there given that administration's considerable animosity towards the US and its fear of allowing any news of the free world to be broadcast there.

The Harley played a major role on that day with a lovely 'Just Married' sign displayed on it's polished handlebars. A very special touch and so romantic.

Hi Donald

I only just saw your article now and just wantd to let you know we had a beautiful, fairlytale wedding in Zoagli , Italy. In one of our wedding pictures taken on the promenade of Zoagli, we are seated and in the background you can see the Pacific Princess in Portofino Harbour. I thought it was quite amazing to have it there on that day, at that precise time, considering that this is where our loves story started!

This article appeared when I was trying to contact an old colleague ,Dr. Najah Husseini. He was apolitical and his first aim was to be a good doctor which he was. It seems that Sam Husseini has that singleminded aim to help people.
I am endeavoring to contact my colleague who I worked with in West Australia and would appreciate any help.

admin,
We both know very well that the review you give about a book is quite up to the understanding of the book in question. I do not question your opinion ... just think that it is simplistic ... but you have deleted from your frame of reference and experienced guide so.
If you read the whole book "Echoes of Eden ', you will surely find a rich and dynamic personal gallery.

Elisheva -- Would you care to say specifically what part of the review of Rabbi Kahn's book you take issue with? It's our policy to correct any factual errors, so please if you know of a specific error in the review, write back and we'll check what you say against the actual text of the book and make whatever correction is necessary. Thanks and kol tov.

Okay, freddiefox, I have taken the hint.
Whatever ... he distorts much of what Rabbi Kahn actually writes. But it is apparently so a journalist works ... even if it hits a fellow Jew ... a Jew Rabbi. Well ... hope Mr.. Harrison can sleep well knowing what he has sown.

He is a journalist and just doing his job. Chill elisheva. What people need to understand is this commentary is by no means the pshat or simple trading of the text or the historical account. It is a drasha, based on mostly mirdrashim, which are creative rabbinic exegesis on how they intrepret the text. There is lots of that and many that disagree with others. He has just selectively hosen the sexual ones to make his book spicey.

Have you ever read the Torah and understood what really happened? You reveal your own relentlessly obscure character and ignorance with such accusations. Unutterably simple and poor impression you give to yourself as a jew ...? You throw out serious allegations and should be highly questionable in your capacity as your right to use "jewishworld"! because you seem completely ignorant of the Torah .

RE: ''Afterwards I asked my grandfather why he hadn’t also invited the man home with us for supper. My grandfather answered that as long as the man behaved, he should be welcome in synagogue, but due to how he had behaved toward his responsibilities he wasn’t welcome in his house. Any Jew who wants to join communal prayers can do so. Any Jew who dishonors his people doesn’t deserve to be honored."

This is sad and pathetic. Great story, but sad that the grandfather here did not have a big enough heart to reach out and show love and compassion to the other man. Whatever happened to Jewish compassion, in this story? It's telling, if you think this is a good story. It's pathetic. Grandpa should have invited the man home too and over the Passover seder. What has happened to some Jews today that they think THEY can do this kind of inhumane action to even other Jews? Ouch!

I had been asking myself how cruise ships handle service dogs while on the high seas. And there you were your blog posted on a service dog site, I can believe that Finnegan was the star of the ship as cute as he is. When people hear about what our dogs do for us they are excited to learn more. I know becuase I have a cocker spaniel serviced dog her name is 'Hayliegh." I can relate to having an unusual breed who works for me. We reside in San Diego and enjoy the outdoors when my health permits.

She has been working for me for 12 yrs now for fibromyaglia chronic fatigue immune disease (CFID) and all the health issues that accompany this challenging disease. . She woke me up at 6 months old letting me know I needed help and to go the hospital. Can you believe it she was just puppy/pet at the time. That moment was the beginning of a life long companion.
She knows when any parts of body will be affected by the fibromyalgia. She is sensitive to the CFID, migraines, when false appendicitis attacks that I get and so much more...

Today she has her own wheels now as she is in her senior years and still remains steadfast companion. she now owns her own wheels a stroller /trailer. Hayliegh likes to catch the wind as I pull her around Lake Murray and she catches the wind.

Thank you for your and a woof! To Finnegan from Hayliegh

Very well put. I find myself dealing with that childhood ideology regularly. To find a place of tolerance, where we no longer are pointing fingers at each other and at God is difficult enough. But to point the finger at ourselves and demand a certain amount of acceptance is an even greater task.

To Don Harrison:

Your thoughtful review is on target (including Ark instead of Arch -- aaaargh!). I hope you found the novel interesting, but I must admit that I set forth to make the three main characters "nice guys" rather than the kind of clownish mess the current GOP candidates are displaying. Fundamentally, my point is that we won't get far in addressing or solving our major problems or challenges in our nation today unless we first fix our political system. And that won't be done by tweeking around the edges. If an Independent were elected president, every right-winger and left-winger in the House and Senate would know it could happen to them in their districts or states. With that kind of pressure, there might be more who, in their own political self-interest, might become part of the solution instead of continuing to be part of the problem. Ah! I'm an optimist; "nice guys" don't always finish last.

Cheers!

maurice picow says '' Living underground is not really the answer, however. My cousin built the modern version of “that little old sod shanty on the plains” in Norman Oklahoma about 25 years ago; in which only one side is exposed.

While it is great for cooling in the summer and warmth in the winter (he also has a Franklin Stove to provide heat), trying to sell that place is a bit problematic, as he has found out – it’s like selling the land, and throwing in the house for free!

Mr. Brennan's skillfully penned words made me feel as if I too were there, touring the compound with him and his friend. I have read many accounts of the atrocities of the Nazi death camps, but upon reading Mr. Brennan's words I shivered as the ghostly images of the horrors came to light. Thank you Mr. Brennan for sharing this with us. This is an incredible piece of journalism.

John,
Very nice story with a poignant ending. I hope that most of her students appreciated her as much as you. There should be some way to inform them of her unfortunate demise, I imagine researching school records would help in a memorial service. Please continue writing.

A Taiwanese man writes: from Taipei: "I feel that some of the language you were using are quite strong and impolite to the Taiwanese people. Ok, it took few days for 7-11 to recall, someone out there spend a lot of effort I believe, but Taiwan is not considered as a country in U.N., so it's normal, our government don't really have any obligation to take care of this, personally, I would negotiate F-16 C/D sales in exchange of the recall.

Speaking of education, I remember studied about the Nazi era in high school as well as in college. We know it but we don't feel it, we don';t feel the pain or sorrow of the Jews, sorry about that. We Taiwanese lack empathy, we don't learn to have empathy in our edyucatiobn. The KMT once did things to the Taiwanese ppl not too different from the Nazis, so, your prob don't know it or you don't feel it either, I wouldn't blame you for that.

Last thing, I couldn't believe business owner were forced to have their sign changed, have the product recalled because of Nazi resemblance. I'm a Seinfeld fan, and I found the "Soup Nazi" episode very entertaining, I really wonder has anyone ever made a complaint to the production company?''

The KMT once did things to the Taiwanese ppl not too different from the Nazis, so, your prob don’t know it or you don’t feel it either, I wouldn’t blame you for that.

Last thing, I couldn’t believe business owner were forced to have their sign changed, have the product recalled because of Nazi resemblance. I’m a Seinfeld fan, and I found the “Soup Nazi” episode very entertaining, I really wonder has anyone ever made a complaint to the production company?”

Thanks Gert,
As always I welcome hearing from you. Not quite sure where I got that bit of info.
We might be splitting hairs between the Broadway Play and the Musical version. But I will yield to your being there and seeing with your own eyes. What a treat.
I also agree that the 'dance chorus' could have been better coordinated, but the overall look was quite handsome.
Hope you are well and wishing a G'mar Tov! to you and your family.

Hi, Carol!!: Just a quick note and a word of correction. Angela Lansbury was the original "Mame" and I was there in New York. She was everything we wanted Mame to be. Movie roles have been played by Rosalind Russell, Lucille Ball, and one other. Nobody, but nobody could ever have been a greater "Vera" than the one and only Bea Arthur.
My companions enjoyed the show. I thought the dancers needed more rehearsal time. I agree that the Mame roll was played to perfection and "Vera" was even better and more gorgeous. Enjoyed reading your review as always,,,,,Gert.

7-Eleven stores in Taiwan pull Hitler lookalike items

These items were pulled from 7-Eleven stores in Taiwan after complaints about their resemblance to Adolf Hitler.
September 28th, 2011

With over 175 Comments , many of them anti-Israel, anti-Jewish or plain antisemitic...... read the comments to see public reax:

In Taiwan, 7-Eleven stores have pulled products featuring a cartoon vampire that bears a striking resemblance to Adolf Hitler after receiving complaints from the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei (ISECO) for selling the items, according to several media reports.

The convenience store chain, whose 4,400 Taiwanese locations are owned by the President Chain Store Corp., has suspended sales of the key chains, USB drives and magnets sporting the apparent caricature of the Nazi dictator. Company officials originally denied that the cartoon was meant to depict Hitler, first calling the black square on the figure’s face a tooth, then a nose, rather than a mustache. But on Wednesday, the company acknowledged that many saw the image as offensive and said that it did not intend to be insensitive by selling the items.

“Because there are people with doubts, we've stopped selling the products for now,” a representative from 7-Eleven told the German Press Agency, according to an Israeli newspaper.

The ISECO, which is Israel’s de facto embassy to Taiwan, since China does not allow its diplomatic allies to have official ties with the island, says that while it does not think the products were meant to be a show of support for anti-Semitic ideology, the cartoon figure does signify a lack of understanding of the Nazi party’s history.

“We were appalled to see the Hitler lookalike image being used, again, as a marketing aid and sold in Taiwan's 7-Eleven stores,” ISECO representative Simona Halperin said in a statement Tuesday. “I find it tragic that once again people down the chain of marketing and promotion fail to recognize the meaning of the Dark Age in human history that the Nazi dictator represents.”

Taiwan has a history of Nazi imagery popping up in public as a result of commercial use.

Outrage about Thai school's Nazi parade

In 1999, a local company used an image of Hitler to advertise space heaters made in Germany. Additionally, in 2000, a restaurant in Taipei called The Jail displayed images of Nazi concentration camps, while a bar in Taipei operated under the name “Nazi Bar” during the 1990s. Both businesses later removed the references.

The nation’s fascination with Nazi lore could stem from the fact that the party has become a symbol of courage because of poor education, which explains why an association created to explore Hitler’s achievements was able to garner interest from 1,000 people in 2005.

“They’re not anti-Semitic, just ignorant,” Lin Chong-pin, a professor of strategic studies at Tamkang University in Taiwan, told the Christian Science Monitor after a photo surfaced on the Ministry of National Defense’s website of three students wearing Nazi uniforms at a military summer camp. “They think the Nazi uniforms look spirited, that the high hat looks very heroic,” he said. “Reading and understanding of history is very poor.”

Products featuring the cartoon figure, which was designed by blogger Mark Lee, are sold in other Taiwanese stores as well, according to 7-Eleven. Lee says that while the figure’s appearance was inspired by Hitler, the cartoon was not meant to endorse any of Hitler’s views. In addition to depicting the dictator’s famous mustache, the caricature also wears a red armband and, in one version, has its arm raised in the fashion of the iconic Nazi salute.

“I had hoped to use it to satirize some bosses,” Lee told Agence France-Presse. “In the eyes of disgruntled employees, many bosses are greedy and dictatorial and like vampires trying to suck money from them.”

Representatives for 7-Eleven declined to disclose how many of Lee’s products were purchased during their short run on the store’s shelves. The items went on sale Sunday and sold for $15 each, according to the San Diego Jewish World.

crossword kid in UK adds: ''As far as I remember Hitler didn't have two fangs and a bald [combover] head... This is just a vague caricature which could just have equally been based on a Taiwanese man.

Also, the logo isn't that much like a swastika at all. Besides, in Asia the reverse Buddhist swastika is still used as a symbol of good fortune and therefore keeps the pre-Nazi connotations that it's lost in the West.

Finally, why do I get the feeling that this isn't actually a "story", but the result of those increasing numbers of Telegraph staff paid to trawl YouTube and fatuous blogs for page-fillers, non-stories and general guff. I bet someone on holiday snapped this image, put it on their blog, and now the DT will try to get some milage from it. Saves going out and doing some proper reporting.

I've just spotted the branding on the packaging. "i'm mark". Of course, that famous dictator Mark Hitler. How silly of me to forget... ''

It looks as though the PC busy-bodies have got f' all to think about.
To me, at first glance, I would not even know the figure represented Adolf Hitler! As for the 'swastika', it's only short fat Dollar symbol! ''

captain swing in UK adds anti-Zionist comment: ''"Adolf Hitler-style cartoon figure", "reminiscent of the Nazis' swastika" So not actually images of Hitler or Swastikas then. Not even close. These days a small black moustache reminds me here in the UK of Blakey and On The Buses (Re-runs obviously!)

After these howls of protest, were any views of outrage expressed by the Israel Economic and Cultural Office concerning the theft and occupation of Palestinian land? Probably more outrageous than a few plastic key rings. And much more lethal. ''

Peter adds good comment: ''I don't really give a sh1t about the story, but if the black square is a tooth, surely it would be on the mouth line where the other 'teeth' are and not above where one would traditionally find a moustache? ''

Mr Kraschner in UK comments: ''Try as I may, I simply cannot believe that this object has caused "outrage" in Taiwan . . . or anywhere else inhabited by normal people.
I'm not sure about the references to the so-called 'silly season' but it certainly raises questions about what journalists get up to when time hangs heavy . . ''

The comments from a UK newspaper on this story are telling. Lobrio says: "I cannot see any insult here really.........when I was on the same longitude as Taiwan in a South East Asia land .......I saw a guy wearing a black T-Shirt with an etching of Adolph Hitler on the front and the words " Next time, no more Mr Nice Guy ". on the back ! ''

UPDATE The local English newspapers in Taipei are now qualifying an AFP news story that was published worldwide today in English, Dutch and German by saying it is "an alleged Hitler lookalike"....... Hmmm. Alleged? Who's tampering with the copy?

The UPDATED AFP wire story now quotes Mark Lee the Taiwanese dude who created the cartoonish Hitler "angry boss" figure on his marketing blog first and then later sold store rights to 711 for a 50/50 share of the profits, and the "toy" is now in all 1000 711 outlets all over Taiwan. They have not been pulled yet and may never be.

Mr Lee told the AFP in a new update that he has been contacted by many news outlets as a result of this story and that he does not understand what all the hullabaloo is about as he created the cartoonish doll figure merely to poke fun at Hitler in a satirical ironic way and the doll is clearly labeled in Chinese packaging as "the boss is angry" and not once does the name Hitler appear on the packaging or on Mr Lee's website. So he believes he did nothing wrong here and does not understand the negative reactions from the Israeli and German trade missions in Taipei , nor the neg reactions from readers around the world outside Taiwan. In fact, most Taiwanese people seem to think the "alleged" Hitler toy is cute and funny, and some don't even recognize Hitler's face in it at all!

can you believe she actually said that? even the design Mark Lee admits he was doing a cartoonish parody of Hitler and yet the PR lady at 711 lies through her.....TEETH: re:

PR official from Taiwan firm which runs 7-Eleven in Taiwan, denied the images were meant to represent the German dictator.

UPDATE - AFP reports worldwide wire story

Hitler lookalike key rings and magnets on sale in Taiwan 7-Eleven

Published on Sep 26, 2011

by Benjamin Yeh

A Hitler lookalike appeared on key rings and magnets on sale at 7-Eleven stores in Taiwan, triggering strong reaction on Monday from the de facto Israeli embassy, which said it was 'appalled'.

The items, seen at several 7-Eleven convenience stores in Taipei, sported an Adolf Hitler-style cartoon figure with a short black moustache, a brown jacket and a red, black and white symbol reminiscent of the Nazis' swastika banners.

'We were appalled to see the Hitler lookalike image being used, again, as marketing aid, and sold in Taiwan's 7-Eleven stores,' said Simona Halperin, representative of the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei.

'I find it tragic that once again, people (in) marketing and promotion fail to recognise the meaning of the dark age in human history the Nazi dictator represents.' She added that she was sure the images were the result of 'ignorance' and did not reflect 'support or identification with the atrocities committed during the Holocaust by the Nazis.'

East Asian pop culture and commercial art has a long history of fascination with Hitler and the Nazis.

Occasionally, Hitler turns up in Asian advertisement campaigns, and in the 1990s a pub called "Nazi Bar" was briefly in operation in Taipei.

In July the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei expressed shock when three local students were seen dressed in Nazi uniforms at a military-organized summer camp.

I absolutely agree. I am a Christian woman who is a tax payer, business owner and an American supportor, as are my peers, of Israel. If our President will not stand for Israel, we will replace him in the election next year. If the UN continues to entertain lunatics guilty of genocide, we will leave the UN and build our own international coalition. Look to history-we routed King George, we can surely overcome the UN and Obama. This you can take to the bank!

Nicely written article on a salient subject. I especially like the part about Save-A-Child's-Heart....too many people think of Israel as nothing but a war zone, but that couldn't be further from the truth. More people need to hear about the amazing positive things Israel and Israelis are doing for the world!

re Avi Netanel:
According to some, "ben [the son of] Netanel" was a distinct name. Regardless, Netanel is a composite of two words netan, meaning, gave, and Kel, meaning G‑d. Thus, as a whole the name ben Netanel means, the person [literally, the son] to whom G‑d gave the Torah.
