Jewish Federation joins relief efforts for Turkey’s quake victims

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)–In the aftermath of last Sunday’s devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Turkey, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) has immediately stepped in to provide relief to the thousands of men, women and children affected by the disaster. The Jewish Federation of San Diego has established an emergency campaign to support the JDC’s emergency work. One hundred percent of funds collected will support those in need with no overhead taken.

The JDC has been working closely with the Jewish Community in Turkey to help get relief immediately to the many people spending a third night in freezing temperatures in crowded tents or huddled around fires across a quake-prone region in Van province, near the Iranian border.

Turkey has requested prefabricated housing and tents from more than 30 countries, including Israel. The JDC and other relief organizations are working tirelessly on the ground to help ensure provisions of aid and shelter from the various countries are transported expediently. JDC staff experts are currently determining what next steps are necessary, especially in the hardest-hit Van Province.

Contributions may be made through the Jewish Federation of San Diego, or for families with advised donor funds, through the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego County.
