VISTA, California (Press Release) — Congregation B’nai Tikvah will host a festive Hanukkah celebration on Friday, Dec. 9 at 6:30pm complete with the second annual “Iron Bubbies” Latke Challenge.
In addition, there will be a full night of fun activities planned including Candle Lighting, a Silent Auction, activities for the kids and a presentation by the Hebrew School students at the synagogue located at 830 S. Melrose Drive.
Contestants will be competing for the title of “Best Latke” judged by local bakery and restaurant owners including Big John from Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad. Anyone who thinks their potato pancakes can hold up to the title of “Best Latke” and would like to participate, can contact woxenhorn@bnaitikvahsd.com. Participants should plan to arrive at the Hanukkah Celebration no later than 6:15pm with a minimum of 50 special, home-made, award-worthy latkes.
A minimal $5 charge per family will cover latkes with all the fixins’, salad and dessert. Latkes are a traditional Hanukkah dish also referred to as potato pancakes typically served with applesauce or sour creram. Because Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of oil, it is traditional to eat fried foods such as latkes and donuts during the holiday.
