Jacob Goldberg to deliver three Mideast lectures

LA JOLLA, California (Press Release)–Professor Jacob Goldberg, former Senior Adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, will deliver a series of three lectures March 5-8 about Israeli-Palestinian peace prospects and western misconceptions of Middle East turmoil.

Goldberg, a professor of political science at Tel Aviv University, will begin the series Monday, March 5, disccussing “‘Arab Spring’: Middle East Turmoil & Western Misconceptions” at 7 p.m. in the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family JCC, 4126 Executive Drive.

He plans to deal with such subtopics as “Has the Spring turned into Winter? Is it really a struggle for democracy? Why do Islamists emerge as winners? What is the ‘Turkish Democratic Model’? Is the Assad dynasty doomed? What will the new Iraq look like?”
On Tuesday, March 6, in the same location at 7 p.m., his topic will be “Iran’s Nuclear Drive: A Moment of Truth at the Point of no Return.”  In this lecture, Goldberg plans to cover such topics as “Has Iran decided ‘to go’ nuclear? How far is Iran from a ‘bomb?’ Can economic sanctions be effective? Who is afraid of a nuclear Iran? Is a military solution feasible? In the absence of an international action, should Israel act unilaterally? Can we live with a nuclear Iran?”
On Thursday, March 8, Goldberg will essay “Is an Israeli-Palestinian Peace Still Possible?”  At 7 p.m. in the Encinitas Library at 540 Cornish Drive, he’ll address such questions as “Can negotiations be revived? Will Hamas take over the Palestinian leadership? Why do Palestinians insist on the ‘Right of Return’? Is Jerusalem a real obstacle? Can the settlements issue be resolved in view of domestic Israeli politics?”

Goldberg has reserved the right to change the lecture topic subject to changes in current events.
