SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis announced guilty verdicts on Monday, March 5, in the trial of Brendan O’Rourke, who opened fire at Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad in October 2010 with a handgun and wounded two girls.
O’Rourke was found guilty of seven counts of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation and seven counts of assault with a firearm.
The trial will now move into the sanity phase, in which the same jurors will determine whether the defendant was sane at the time of the shooting. Those proceedings begin Tuesday, March 6, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 24 of the San Diego Superior Court, North County Division.
“The community was deeply shaken by this school shooting and today’s verdict brings us one step closer to justice in this case,” DA Dumanis said. “Deputy District Attorneys Summer Stephan and Patrick Espinoza and their team did an outstanding job presenting the evidence to the jurors.”
