Potpourri: Filner campaign reacts to UT endorsement; scholarships for Jewish students

SAN DIEGO — As the June 5 primary election nears, electronic and postal mail boxes are filling up with news and accusations about candidates.  We try to sort through the material to find what is interesting for members of the Jewish community

Congressman Bob Filner is trying to turn the Union-Tribune’s front page endorsement of his opponent Carl DeMaio in the San Diego mayoral election into positive news.

In a press release his campaign headlines “Bob Filner Has Downtown Insiders Running Scared,” the pro-Filner forces zero in on UT Editor Jeff LIght’s comment that “We as an editorial board do not want to see Bob Filner get through to the general election, because the enviornment around the general election is much more favorable to Bob Filner. So we certainly want to keep that from happening.”

If no one gets a majority vote in the June 5 election, there will b e a runoff in November.  Says the Filner campaign: “It couldn’t be clearer that the UT editorial board is attempting to influence an election wth their back room deals.  Bob’s only interest is representing all of San Diego.  He is opposed to a convention center tax that puts money nto hotelier pockets and a Chargers stadium at 10th Avenue Marine Terminal at the expense of expanding Port commerce.  He has the courage to stand up to these downtown special interests.”

Meanwhile, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who like Filner is Jewish, continues to stress that she is the only woman in the four=candidate race.

Describing a “Virtual Town Hall” meeting she held on MOnday night, her campaign said many questions “centered on issues of particular importance to women.  Dumanis has a strong coalition of women supporting her candidacy and has received a 100 percent rating from Planned Parenthood for her longtime support of a woman’s right to choose and pro-choice issues.”
