SAN DIEGO (Press Release)- After three years of direct grant making through its San Diego County Small Grant Program, Weingart Foundation has announced that, as of August 2013, the program will be managed by the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego (JCF). This exciting re-granting relationship is designed to maintain Weingart Foundation’s commitment to San Diego County while grounding the program in a foundation with local expertise and extensive grantmaking history.
Weingart Foundation has had a longstanding connection to San Diego — first through the late Sol Price, one of its founding board members, and more recently through its late board member Murray Galinson. Sol and Murray were passionate advocates for San Diego and the importance of its nonprofit sector. The San Diego County Small Grant Program was one of Murray’s many legacies, and since 2010 this program has granted a total of $1.9 million to 136 nonprofits across the county. Both men also had strong connections to the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego.
The Jewish Community Foundation and Weingart Foundation share the goals of respectful and responsive grantmaking, quality technical assistance, and support to strengthen the capacity and sustainability of nonprofit organizations.
The new JCF-Weingart Grant Program continues Weingart Foundation’s commitment to providing responsive, unrestricted, countywide funding to organizations serving low-income and underserved individuals and communities. All grant guidelines and policies will remain unchanged, including Weingart Foundation’s financial commitment. The program will continue to provide grants of a maximum of $25,000 to nonprofit organizations with budgets under $1.5 million that meet grant guidelines. Janine Mason will also remain as program officer, working as a consultant with the Jewish Community Foundation and the JCF will manage all program outreach and communication, application review, funding decisions, and fund distribution.
In its pilot year of FY2014, the program application deadline will be in January 2014. The Jewish Community Foundation will also hold community outreach events on November 4, 2013 for nonprofits interested in learning more about the program and how to apply.
