SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — The late San Diego Chargers coach Sid Gillman made an appearance in a U-T column by sportswriter Bill Pinella entitled “From Pages Past”: Fifty years ago this date, Gillman was recuperating from surgery on varicose veins on his right leg. “I’ve got to get back on my feet,” he groused. “It’s a fast moving world and I might miss something.” … Thirty years ago there were rumors that owner Donald T. Sterling was planning to move basketball’s then San Diego Clippers to Los Angeles. His non-answer at the time: “You known I’m not the spokesman for the club. You have to talk to Arn Tellem.” And Tellem’s comment? “Possibly.”

California Gov. Jerry Brown was at San Diego City Hall on May 13 to discuss his $107.8 billion budget proposal. From Sacramento, columnist Steven Greenhut wrote that the plan had some bad news for Senate President pro tempore Darrell Steinberg: No additional $1 billion to be tacked onto the spending plan for universal pre-school, as Steinberg has proposed. Brown said if the Legislature thinks an extra front-end year of schooling is needed, it should fund it from the current budget, and presumably make cuts in other programs.
