SAN DIEGO (SDJW) –Mayor Kevin Faulconer, in his inaugural issue of The Mayoral Monthly issued May 19, praised 9th District City Councilwoman Marti Emerald in two separate articles.

Emerald, a member of the Jewish community, was cited for her work as chair of the Council’s Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee, in implementing Faulconer’s “One San Diego” proposal to redirect more Community Block Development Grants from the federal government towards infrastructure repair.

“We have an opportunity for the city of San Diego to take bold action in transforming communities,” said Faulconer. “Block-by-block, we cna and will heal communities, and block-by-block we can and will create economic opportunities.”

Agreeing, Emerald said: “This proactive approach of leveraging CDBG funds will strengthen neighborhoods by investing inthe City’s critical public infrastructure needs. This approach will help stabilize and improve neighborhood by directing the investment of federal resources to our much needed communities.”

Previously, CDGB funds were parceled out by City Council district, with each councilmember having different priorities. Some focused on the arts, others on infrastructures, others on recreation and so forth.

In a second article, Faulconer recalled that on April 15, he and Emerald jointly issued a proclamation declaring that day to be “SDSU Men’s Basketball Day” in the City of San Diego, in honor of the team compiling a 31-5 season record. SDSU is located within Emerald’s councilmanic district.

Another member of the Jewish community receiving attention in the mayor’s new monthly was Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman who was pictured with other officials standing behind Faulconer as he announced the city’s $2.97 billion budget.

On the same day that The Mayoral Monthly made its appearance, Emerald was drawing attention to the city’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The councilwoman donated an automated external defribrellator (AED) to the Mid-City Police Substation locatedwithin her district.

She explained: “Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in our country. With each passing minute in SCA, a person loses about a 10 percent chance of survival. AED use significantly improves the chance of survival for victgims. Police officers often arrive on scene prior to fire/EMS, their use of CPR/AEDs can help build the bridge to survival for the patient and make resuscitation more viable for emergency medical responders.”

The councilwoman also authored a resolution declaring the week of May 19th as EMS Week in the City of San Diego.

She said: “Employees of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and Rural/ Metro successfully work together to provide high quality service to our citizens 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is important to recognize the innovation, hard work, and coordinated efforts that City and Rural/Metro employees contribute to our EMS program.”
