SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — With an election approaching on Tuesday, June 3, news organizations are focusing on campaign contributions for candidates and ballot measures, and readers are offering their opinions on the worthiness of the candidates. Unsurprisingly, members of our Jewish community are involved in the mix.

For example, in a U-T OpEd piece, Mel Katz and Phil Blair, executive officers of Manpower, make a case for the reelection of Scott Peters, a Democrat, over challenger and former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio. … The Voice of San Diego meanwhile, in a story by Sara Libby, reports that numerous national papers have been saying that DeMaio lost the 2012 mayor’s race to since-resigned Bob Filner by a narrow margin. But the truth is the spread was 5 percentage points, which is not narrow. .. In a story in The Times of San Diego, meanwhile, it was noted that Mel Katz is among the contributors to the “Yes on B and C” campaign, which leaders in Barrio Logan say will protect the environmental quality of their neighborhood. The opposition campaign is heavily funded by shipbuilding interests on the bay nearby, who say the measures will be ruinous to the local economy.

A U-T editorial opposes a bill by Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Maryland) to make congressional campaigns eligible for public financing under certain circumstances. The editorial notes in passing that three local Democratic Congress members – Susan Davis, Juan Vargas, and Scott Peters – are supporting the measure.

The 1984 San Diego Padres, who won the National League pennant, were feted by their successors at Petco Park, and among them were Norm Sherry, who was a pitching coach for the team.  Earlier in his career, as a catcher, Sherry had been the battery mate for a Jewish baseball legend, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax. U-T sportswriter Dennis Lin reported that other 1984 Padres on hand were Kurt Bevacqua, Steve Garvey, Doug Gwosdz, Terry Kennedy and Garry Templeton.
