SAN DIEGO (SDJW)—The U-T on Tuesday, May 27, featured its ongoing coverage of District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis’ effort to win a fourth term against the determined challenge of Bob Brewer. The newspaper also ran a second part of its series on the reminiscences of retired cancer surgeon Dr. Ira Levine.
In a look-ahead article about the June 3 election, U-T writer Mark Walker reports that Brewer is well funded and may give Dumanis the run of her political life if he is able to hold her to under 50 percent on June. That would set up a November runoff election, with the third candidate Terri Wyatt out of the race. A poll had Dumanis ahead of Brewer 44 to 27 percent with 6 percent for Wyatt and 22 percent undecided. The article said that Dumanis, a lesbian, lost LGBT support when she endorsed Ernie Dronenberg, the county clerk, recorder and property tax assessor for reelection. Dronenberg had filed a lawsuit seeking instructions from the state Supreme Court on whether his office should be issuing wedding licenses to same-sex couples in light of a U.S. Supreme Court decision lifting California’s ban. He withdrew the suit under a hail of criticism.
Levine, profiled by columnist Fred Dickey, expressed doubts about the beneficial effects of organic foods and over-the-counter medicines. Many, he said, will be proven valueless.” He added: “there are five things that Americans can do that will reduce health risks dramatically: eat in moderation, drink in moderation, exercise, don’t smoke, and wear seatbelts. And you don’t need a doctor to tell you any of those things.”
