San Diego Jews in the News: May 30, 2014

SAN DIEGO (SDJW) – The new interim general director of the San Diego Opera, William Mason, is the former general director of Chicago’s Lyric Opera. In a story by the U-T’s James Chute, Mason took issue with his predecessor Ian Campbell’s suggestion that cutting the Opera’s budget would lead to inferior quality: “You do things different but it doesn’t mean you do them at a lower artistic level,” declared Mason.

Speaking of budgets, Forensic Health Services in Escondido—an organization that interviews child-abuse victims—had a $200,000 operating deficit, prompting its client—the County of San Diego—to figure ways to provide the organization with more money. County Supervisors Bill Horn and Dave Roberts joined Sheriff Bill Gore and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis  in annoucing that the county will increase its reimbursement payments to the organization. In addition, the U-T’s Paul Sisson reported, the Golden Door (founded by Deborah Szekely) has donated $75,000 for the renovation of Forensic Health Service’s facility, where more than 300 children a year are interviewed.

IN MEMORIAM – Phyllis Janet Mazer (April 22, 1931-May 27, 2014) was the subject of a sponsored obituary in the U-T. Mazer had been affiliated with Hadassah, City of Hope (which was founded by the Jewish community), Ner Tamid Synagogue in Poway, and Brandeis University National Women’s Committee. Burial was scheduled May 30 at El Camino Memorial Gardens.

IN MEMORIAM—Delores Brownstein Timmons ( ? — May 25, 2014) died in Palm Desert, California, according to a sponsored notice in the U-T. In San Diego Timmons had worked as an interior designer and had volunteered at the Salk Institute. Entombment was scheduled May 30 at Cypress View Mausoleum/ Home of Peace.
