SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — Defense Attorney Dan Greene is defending the former administrator of the Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad against charges of child molestation. In the case which has attracted considerable publicity, Greene pleads for the public to withhold judgment about the charges against Jeffrey Barton “I’m telling you they are not true,” Greene told U-T reporter Teri Figueroa.

The U-T’s Carla Peterson invoked the name of the late Jewish magician Harry Houdini in describing “Illusion: Nothing is as it Seems,” an exhibit currently at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. One of the exhibits is called the Hurwitz Singularity Sculpture—named after Wonga co-founder Jonty Hurwitz, who also is an artist. It arranges slices of a figure – in this case a model of a head – in a sequence. When viewed through a scope, they come together to form the full head.

As the June 3 primary election gets closer and closer, the U-T’s Mark Walker looks at the elections for Congress that have been eclipsed by the battle between Congressman Scott Peters and his challenger, former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio. The incumbent in one of those races is Congresswoman Susan Davis, who as the only Democrat in the election is expected to easily survive the primary and move on to a general election. Seeking to oppose her are five Republicans—Larry Wilske, John Edwards, Joel Marchese, Jim Stieringer, and Wayne True – as well as independents Christina Bobb and John W. Campbell. The Republican party has endorsed Wilske, a former Navy SEAL, who told the U-T. “I’m dissatisfied with Susan Davis as a leader.” He described SEALS as “natural problem solvers.”

New York “Myke” Shelby, well-known motorcycle enthusiast, is hosting a free barbecue following a memorial ride scheduled at 1 p.m. Sunday from Mount Soledad to his Harley-Davidson dealership on Morena Boulevard. The ride is intended to keep alive the memory of the murdered Barry and Carol Sandberg, whose bodies were found May 7, 2009 in their Bay Park home. The perpetrator or perpetrators of the crime have never been found.

Glenn Cohen, an attorney based in Jacksonville, Florida, is counseling golf superstar Phil Mikelson of Rancho Santa Fe, as rumors swirl that the Security and Exchange Commission and FBI are looking into some of the stock purchases he made to see whether he benefited from “insider” knowledge passed on to sports gambler William “Billy” Walters from investor Carl Icahn. With stories of the investigation appearing in the Wall Street Journal, the U-T’s Dan McSwain quoted Cohen as saying “Phil is not the target of any investigation. Period.”
