Restaurateur David Cohen is teaming up with Tim Mays of the Casbah to turn the North Park Theatre into a venue for rock concerts and comedy performances. In fact, Ronnie Spector will give a concert on July 4, and comedian Rita Rudner will be performing there July 19, according to a Page A-1 story in the U-T by Karla Peterson.

Senate President pro tempore Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) was in San Diego to witness Gov. Brown signing the $156 billion state budget bill. David Garrick, in a U-T story on page A-4 paraphrased Steinberg as saying that the occasion was quite a contrast from other budget signings with a surplus and smiling people in evidence.

David Garrick had another story on page B-5 in which he quoted Greg Stein, board chairman of the San Diego Taxpayers Association, about the hiring of W.Mark Leslie as the organizations new president and chief executive officer. He said that Leslie has passion about the group’s ideals as well as a good track record, as a former executive with AT&T.

A U-T editorial on page B-6 recalls how the late Jonas Salk never complained about the March of Dimes prohibiting him from patenting his polio vaccine. The U-T compared his selflessness with the decision by Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla Motors, to share with rival electric car manufacturers various patents for the benefit of the planet.

In the UT sports digest, on page D-2, the U-T reported that the new coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, David Blatt, has less than a week before the Cavs get to make the first pick in the NBA draft.

In the U-T baseball column on page D-4, Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein says coach Rick Renteria and his staff deserve credit for helping Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo for improved hitting this season. Epstein also had praise for Manny Ramirez, who may be joining the AAA club in Iowa as a player-coach.
