Because he is from California, the new Majority Leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, is under pressure to show that he is at least as conservative as Eric Cantor, who gave up the leadership position after losing in a Republican primary election in Virginia, according to a combined MCT and AP story that appeared on Page A-2 of the U-T.

In an A-4 story about Israel’s retaliatory strikes against Syria, IDF Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said that Israel “will not tolerate any attempt to breach Israel’s sovereignty and will act in order to safeguard the civilians of the state of Israel.”

The U-T continues its campaign to get District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis to release the letter of recommendation she wrote for the son of a wealthy Mexican who is the center of a federal probe into foreign money being illegally funneled into American election campaigns, including Dumanis’s unsuccessful 2012 bid to be mayor. A B-1 story by the U-T’s Greg Moran reports that the District Attorney’s own policy “Special Directive 33” says employees of the office should not use the letterhead for personal letters unrelated to the business of the office.

IN MEMORIAM– Civic leader Phil Klauber’s obituary ran on Page B-4. He wasn’t Jewish but his grandfather Abraham Klauber was one of the Jewish pioneers in San Diego and is buried at the Home of Peace Cemetery. Phil, who died May 23 at 98 years of age, was the son of Laurence Klauber and Grace Gould Klauber. His uncle Melville Klauber was a founder of the San Diego Historical Society. Phil as a boy worked for Klauber-Wangenheim Co., which was a wholesale supply store that sold goods to general stores throughout the Southwest. He was active in Rotary, LEAD San Diego, Friends of Balboa Park, the Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Community Foundation, and other organizations.

Roger Showley profiled Bruce Reznik, the new executive director of the San Diego Housing Federation, beginning on page C-1 of the U-T. Resnik listed the Federation’s “very complementary goals” as being “a healthy environment, thriving communities, affordable housing, land use and transportation planning.”
