SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — Temple Emanu-El welcomes Tamara Levin to the staff as the new director of the Price Family Preschool. Levin spent her childhood and early adult years in Cape Town, South Africa, where she attended the University of Cape Town and then taught grades five and six. She came to America with her husband in 1987.
Although she had worked with older children in South Africa, Levin discovered a love of preschool-age children and an aptitude for working with them when she returned to teaching after her youngest child entered kindergarten. She spent 19 years at Temple Emanu-El in Newton, Massachusetts as teacher, lead teacher, and summer camp director.
She is excited to be at Temple Emanu-El in San Diego. When she visited the school, she found it to be “calm and friendly” with children happy in their classrooms. Levin likes the fact that the preschool is part of a temple community and is nurtured by the entire temple. She praises the teachers for being “dedicated, wonderful, gentle and creative.”
Levin hopes to support the teachers with professional development programs in conjunction with other preschools and, as a separate goal, to address the specific needs of the Price Family Preschool teachers. She also looks to increase opportunities for parents to be part of the school activities.
“I have always had a deep connection to my Jewish heritage,” says Levin. “I have always sought to work in a Jewish environment. I believe in creating in children a spirit of Judaism so they feel they belong to this community.”
Levin has two adult daughters, Tasha, 26 who lives in Irvine and Romy, 24 who lives in Boston.
